MADISON - It looked like the Cheesemakers were headed for overtime as mere seconds remained on the clock. Then disaster struck.
Madison Edgewood put in the first goal of the game with just six seconds left and held on for the win. The goal may not have happened had Monroe (5-7, 2-3 Badger South) not been without one of their key defensive players.
"We lost our star captain defenseman earlier in the week and that hurt us," Cheesemakers coach Tony Vasquez said, referring to Matt Hodgson.
According to Vasquez, Hodgson has a knee injury and is optimistic about his return. Not one to take chances on a player's health, Vasquez said the injury may be season-ending. Despite his absence the Cheesemakers had opportunities to win.
"On offense we had three breakaways (only the goalie between the ball handler and the goal), which are opportunities you have to capitalize on," Vasquez said. "They see that open field and sometimes get excited. They're young and still learning, but they're playing tough."
