MONROE - It's official: The Monroe boys 3,200-meter relay team received an official invitation to the Penn Relays on Sunday.
It marks just the second time that Monroe's 3,200 relay team has been invited to the Penn Relays. In 2007, the Cheesemakers finished 11th at the national meet.
The Cheesemakers will send six runners including Ethan Moehn, Matt Bush, Alex Barenklau, Skyler Stingley, Joel Henry and Payton Hoesly to the Penn Relays April 26-28.
"They are going to get an experience that most high school kids won't have the opportunity to experience a national meet," Monroe track coach Curt Miller said. "They have all run well this year and they are all deserving."
The Cheesemakers are one of 74 teams that will run in the preliminaries on Friday, April 27. The top 12 teams will advance to the finals on April 28. Each heat will include about 20 relay teams.
The Cheesemakers qualified for the Penn Realys by running the 3,200 relay in 8 minutes, 12.73 seconds at the Madison West Realys earlier this season.
Miller said the team will probably determine this week who will run in the 3,200 relay.
"It's just a great opportunity to run in this meet," Miller said. "When they get back they will refocus on winning conference and doing well at the end of the season."
