MONROE - The Monroe girls soccer team made a minor offensive adjustment and took Monona Grove to the brink Thursday before losing, 3-2.
"We talked a lot about attacking more on offense and getting the ball wider," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "I think our team stepped up and did that."
Monona Grove freshman Emma Raymond scored two goals to lead the Silver Eagles at Honey Creek Park.
Cassie Blazer scored the game-winning goal on a cross from Erin Bork in the 53rd minute.
Early on, the match had the makings of a thrilling shootout. Raymond scored the first goal at 1 minute, 43 seconds to give the Silver Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Cheese answered when senior midfielder Erin Solawetz scored a goal on an assist from fellow senior Pam Lehman at 4:29.
Raymond scored her second unassisted goal at 27:38 to give the Silver Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Monroe (0-3-2, 0-2 Badger South) again responded with Lehman scoring an unassisted goal at 28:08 to tie the score at 2-2 at the half.
"It's always an exciting game when one team scores and the other team scores after that," O'Neill said.
O'Neill said Solawetz and Kirstie Hinojosa were excellent in attacking from the outside.
"They did a tremendous job of attacking until the very end," she said.
