MILTON - The final Badger South Conference dual meet turned into one to remember for the Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team.

The Cheesemakers edged Milton 86-84 Tuesday. With the win, Monroe-New Glarus improves to 8-2 overall and 6-2 in the Badger South.

"It was the final dual of the season and we knew it was going to be close," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "The girls swam focused and determined. It's the best record this team has had in years."

It all came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Red Hawks had to finish first and third to win the meet. However, Monroe's 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Mekenzie Hammer, junior Nina Schiro, freshman Francesca Schiro and senior Maddie Hammer finished first in the race with a time of 3 minutes, 51.13 seconds.

"The 400 free relay has in the past been a thorn in our side, but this season and tonight it proved to be the edge we needed," Moser said.

The Cheesemakers won five of the 11 events. Maddie Hammer took first in the 100 freestyle (55.38) and Francesca Schiro won the 50 freestyle (27.60). All three of the Monroe-New Glarus relays took first.

The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Mekenzie Hammer, Francesca Schiro, Grace Keith and Cammi Ganshert won with a time of 2:00.10. Ganshert teamed with Emily Meritt, Megan Benzschawel and Maddie Hammer to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.55).

Mekenzie Hammer placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:18.95) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.32). Ganshert finished second in the 50 freestyle (27.99) and Keith was second in the 100 butterfly (1:07.08). Nina Schiro took second in the 500 freestyle (5:52.82) and Francesca Schiro was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.13).
