MONROE - For Monroe senior Abbey Schneider and the Cheesemaker girls soccer team, the 10-1 win over Wisconsin Heights Friday was a chance at redemption and to prove themselves.

Schneider was back at full strength a year after she blew out her knee against the Vanguards. The Cheesemakers as a team were out to prove that the one goal they scored on 45 shots in the season opener against Dodgeville was an aberration.

Schneider said she did think about how she got injured last year playing against Wisconsin Heights.

"I just really wanted to beat them," Schneider said. "Of course all we want is to win. We have worked really hard in practice at scoring."

It didn't take the Cheesemakers long to drive home their point that they would improve at finishing off shots. Schneider connected on a long distance goal that banged off the top of the cross bar from about 18-yards out at 1 minute, 51 seconds. The Cheesemakers scored three goals in the first 8 minutes and exploded for seven first half goals en route to the victory.

"The girls all played individually well against Dodgeville," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "As a team we were not communicating. Today everyone was communicating well on the runs and passes. It was teamwork today that got us so many goals. We worked in practice at being more composed near the goal. They started the game a lot more composed."

Monroe freshman Vanessa Studer, freshman Gabby Ludwig and freshman Maddie Knutson each scored two goals to propel the Cheesemakers. Schneider finished with one goal and two assists. Studer also had two assists for the Cheesemakers who improved to 1-1.

Ludwig scored on an assist from Schneider at 3:05. With the Wisconsin Heights goal keeper charging out hard, Studer slipped in a goal to the near post on an assist from Schneider at 7:37 to give the Cheesemakers a commanding 3-0 lead.

"I couldn't do it all by myself," Studer said. "My team worked hard to get me open and gave me great passes."

Studer said the passing was definitely a key in the game.

"We were passing so well," Studer said. "We played so well as a team. I think our team chemistry is going to get better each time. I think it will get better as the season goes on."

Knutson scored her first goal at 31:36 on a pass from freshman Hayley Keene. She scored her second goal two minutes later on a pass from Studer to give the Cheesemakers a 5-0 lead. Studer and junior Chelsea Haffele each scored goals late in the first half to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 7-0 halftime lead. Haffele was playing in her first game since tearing the meniscus in her knee.

The second half started out a lot like the first half ended. Ludwig scored a goal on an assist from Studer at 42:30 and senior Briana Beck scored about 3 minutes later to give the Cheesemakers a 9-0 lead. Freshman Celia Kline capped the scoring for the Cheesemakers with a goal at 76:19.

Monroe senior goalkeeper Katie Coplien had three saves.

It's also a boost for the Cheesemakers to have a senior captain like Schneider back on the field to help attack the goal.

"It was a huge for us to have Abbey back," O'Neill said. "She was fired up for this game. She got to the ball first. She has great vision on the field."
