MONROE - Monroe senior Jess Weeden's first swim meet Tuesday after competing in the Deaflympics was a record breaker.

Weeden teamed with seniors Kendell Niffenegger, Randi Robertson and freshman Rachel Root to finish second in the 400-meter freestyle relay in a school record time of 4 minutes, 24.54 seconds. The new mark eclipsed the previous record of 4:24.62.

Monroe lost the dual meet to McFarland, 97.5-72.5, but the Cheesemakers set several personal best times.

"It was another great meet with many close races," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "The girls never gave up even though at times a few of them were pretty hard on themselves. The highlight was a new team record in the 400 free relay."

Root won the 100 freestyle (1:04.32) and the 200 freestyle (2:22.43).

Weeden won the 100 butterfly (1:10.50) and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:34.35).

Monroe junior Leanna Schwartzlow had three second place finishes. She took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.14), the 200 freestyle relay and was on the runner-up 200 medley relay team.

In the 200 medley relay, Schwartzlow teamed with Robertson, Root and Niffenegger to take second with a time of 2:14.15, which was a season best time by about six tenths of a second. Niffenegger finished third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:17.75, which was a personal record by seven tenths of a second.

"Right now we are fighting the clod/ flu bug, which made it difficult for some to make their best times," Moser said.

Monroe's 200 medley relay team of Sarah Kind, Nichole Lattin, Jolene DeNure and Sara Heitkamp took third (2:26.35).

The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Schwartzlow, Kind, Heitkamp and Weeden finished second with a time of 2:01. Schwartzlow added a third place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:37.37).

Robertson took second in the 50 freestyle (:31.26) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:15.57).

Monroe sophomore Cat Weeden finished second in the 400 freestyle (5:23.44) and Lattin took third (5:31.7).
