MONONA - The Monroe boys track team had one victory at the Monona Grove Invitational on Friday, and it was impressive.
The 3,200-meter relay unit of Matt Bush, Ethan Moehn, Skyler Stingley and Alex Barenklau won with a blistering time of 8 minutes, 3.46 seconds.
"That's fast," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "It was a very good race between a lot of good schools. We just had four guys who each ran a very good leg. Nobody had a below-average leg at all."
It's the same team that competed in the prestigious Penn Relays last month and one that Miller has used sparingly during the regular season. But with the Cheesemakers scheduled to host the Badger Conference meet on Tuesday, it's time to tune up for a run at a state title.
"We don't often have the opportunity to run our four best in a relay and we don't usually see the level of competition we did today," Miller said.
"Those four put together a great effort."
Monroe received seventh-place finishes from Steve Christiansen in the 1,000 and from David Kelly in the 400.
The 1,600 relay team of Payton Hoesly, Kelly, Cody Oudinot and Nick Gross was eighth in 3:39.02.
"That's a time a lot of teams would love to have," Miller said, pointing out that the Cheesemakers' top five runners in the event did not compete.
The other highlight was Bryce Messerli's ninth-place effort in the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, 5 inches.
"That's about a foot better than he's ever jumped," Miller said. "It's nice that as a senior, he's peaking at the right time."
The full meet results were not available at presstime.
The Monroe girls will compete in the MG Invitational today.
