PLATTEVILLE - The Monroe boys track team ran to four championships at the Platteville Invitational Thursday night.
Monroe junior Caleb Ahrens won the 55-meter hurdles and anchored the 1,600 relay team to a first-place finish. Ahrens teamed up with Dylan Starck, Skyler Stingley and Cameron Wahl to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3 minutes, 47.2 seconds.
Stingley won the 400 and junior Jeffrey Hill won the pole vault (12-feet). Although no team scores were kept, the Cheesemakers starred on the track.
"We experimented in a couple of areas," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "We don't focus too much on winning an indoor meet. We focus on getting them ready for the outdoor season, which counts a lot more."
The Cheesemakers dominated the 1,600 with four runners in the top eight. Starck finished second in a personal record time of 4:49.46. Sophomore Luke Peterson took third (4:54.03). Sophomore Joel Henry finished fifth with a personal record (4:56.39) and freshman Steve Christiansen was eighth with a PR (5:05.91).
Monroe senior Michael Reed took second place in the shot put with a PR of 48-10 3/4.
Monroe girls track coach Curt Miller was excited to see his sprinters get off to a strong start at the Platteville Invitational Thursday night.
The Cheesemakers had three individual champions at UW-Platteville. Monroe senior Stephanie Wyss won the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.7 seconds and sophomore Maria Eberle took first in the 55 (:7.79). Junior Brenna Bazley won the triple jump with a leap of 30-feet, 1-1/2 inches.
Although no team scores were kept, Miller was encouraged by the results.
"It's nice to win a couple of the sprinting events," Miller said. "Stephanie Wyss and Maria Eberle have trained as hard in the offseason as anyone I have ever coached. Their times and places are the result of a lot of hard work."
The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Lizzy Dale, Wyss, Tessa Frutiger and Tess Seichter finished first with a time of 10 minutes, 34.67 seconds.
Jessica Leu took second place in the shot put (32-3) and Laura Chopp was second in the pole vault (8-6). The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Jessica Jackson, Ty Gibson, Jess Miller and Bazley finished second with a time of 2:01.04.
