BRODHEAD - The Brodhead boys basketball team needed a rousing effort from two of its biggest stars Tuesday to advance past McFarland, 56-53, in the first round of the Division 2 regional tournament.

Junior guard Jacob Cole scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including going 7-for-11 from the free throw line in the frame, and sophomore big man J.J. Panoske scored 10 of his 24 points in the final period to lead Brodhead to the win.

The Cardinals (14-7) opened strong, taking a 15-7 lead over Rock Valley North's McFarland (11-10). By halftime, that edge was cut to 22-19. By the end of the third quarter, the Spartans tied the score at 33-33.

Then Panoske and Cole went to work.
