BELLEVILLE - The Brodhead-Juda wrestling team showcased its depth by hanging on to win the Raider Scramble championship.
Brodhead-Juda had nine wrestlers place in the top three en route to winning the Raider Scramble 186.5-176 over Evansville-Albany Saturday, Dec. 14. Mount Horeb-Barneveld finished third (173) and Monroe was fourth (126) at the 10-team tournament.
"Going in, it never even crossed my mind that we would win the tournament," Brodhead-Juda coach Tim Colden said. "The kids wrestled well. We got a lot of pin points. Every point mattered. It was tight all the way."
Brodhead-Juda had two champions including junior Gavin Baade at 182 pounds and junior Logan Maurer at heavyweight. Baade improved his record to 7-0 and Maurer moved his mark to 12-0 this season.
Baade went 5-0 in the tournament and racked up five pins. He pinned Evansville-Albany's Wesley Park in 31 seconds and pinned Dodgeville's Andrew Evenson in 1:08. Baade then pinned Evansville-Albany's Lincoln Rosonke in 1:45 and pinned Deerfield's Ben Vander Grinten in 3:19. In the title match, Baade pinned Sugar River's Jacob Larson in 3:44.
Maurer was just as dominant as Baade, posting five wins on his way to the championship. He pinned Evansville-Albany's Noah Pagel in 50 seconds and pinned Dodgeville's Payton Calvert in 36 seconds. Maurer pinned Mount Horeb-Barneveld's Sam Moyer in 36 seconds and Cuba City-Southwestern's Cal Grutz in 28 seconds. In a battle of two state qualifiers, Maurer, ranked No. 2 in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll, tossed Monroe senior Brett Zimmerman, ranked No. 4, to his back and got the pin in 23 seconds. It's the fourth time Maurer has beat Zimmerman the last two years.
"Logan is finally starting to get some matches," Colden said. "He was able to get his hips up and toss him to his back. The Zimmerman kid is the best kid he has wrestled so far."
Brodhead-Juda junior Justin Sangermano (126), junior Brady Colden (170) and Stephen Voights (220) each finished second and freshman Blake Burns (106), senior Jordan Schubert (145), junior Derrick Hartman (152) and senior Tyler Davis (195) each took third.
Monroe senior Austin Minder (195) took first place winning all four matches he wrestled. Minder improved to 11-0 this season. Minder pinned Evansville-Albany's Forrest Johnson in 32 seconds and defeated Davis 5-3. He edged Evansville-Albany's Lucas Rinehart 10-8 and pinned Dodgeville's Sam Gollon in 3:44.
"He just keeps it simple and defends well," Monroe coach Tom Witt said of Minder. "He has big hands. He grabs you and gets ahold of you. He doesn't make mistakes and gets takedowns."
Monroe freshman Cole Murray (126) bounced back from a heartbreaking 4-2 loss to Milton Friday, Dec. 13 and won the championship at his weight class. He knocked off Deerfield's Jared Gilbertson 9-2. Gilbertson took fifth place at state last year. He and then lost a nail-biter to Evansville-Albany's Chase Katzenmeyer 5-3, but rebounded by defeating Sangermano 4-2 in overtime, winning it on a takedown.
"It's just like I told him after the Milton match," Witt said of Murray. "He's talented. It's not a 40-yard sprint. It's a long season and he wants to be good at the end of the season."
Witt was proud the Cheesemakers were able to finish in the top four.
"With only 11 wrestlers who could score points, and as young as we are, I was very pleased," he said.
Zimmerman went 4-1 in the tournament. He pinned Sauk Prairie's Jon Elliot in 50 seconds and pinned Evansville-Albany's Ryan Meehan in 1:14. Zimmerman then pinned Belmont-Platteville's Lucas Stoney in 3:51 before losing a tough championship match to Maurer.
"Logan is a very good wrestler," Witt said. "He will probably be ranked No. 1. He's a 275-pound kid who is a good rider. There are still some positions (Zimmerman) hasn't been in. Every time he wrestled him last year he got better. Hopefully, we will see him again at the regional, sectional and at state."
Monroe freshman David Andrews (113) went 3-2 in the tournament and finished third place. Monroe sophomore Traiten Gorr (182) went 3-2 to take fourth place and Mitch Swanson (152) took fifth. Gorr was just two points away from wrestling in the finals.
"If he (Gorr) would have won that first match he would have been in the finals," Witt said. "Three of the five matches he has lost this year are by one or two points. He has to find a way to win those close matches."
Brett Grinder (152) and Young Chul-Vetterli (160) each won titles for the Raiders. Both Grinder and Vetterli improved their records to 10-1. Grinder pinned Monroe's Mike Harnish in 41 seconds and pinned Dodgeville's Henry Schickel in 3:13.
