BRODHEAD - Sophomore Josiah DeLorme scored a game-high 21 points to help the Brodhead boys basketball team roll to a 62-46 non-conference win over Albany Saturday.
"I think Josiah is feeling confident about his shot," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "He has kind of been in a zone lately, stroking 3-pointers."
Brodhead (3-1, 1-1 Rock Valley South) jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter lead and led by 11 at the half. The Cardinals shot 16 of 20 from the free throw line. Despite having a young team, Kammerer is happy with the 3-1 start.
"It went better than anticipated," he said of the game against the Comets. "I think after we beat Palmyra-Eagle who is picked to finish high in the conference and we beat a good Albany team that is always well coached by Derik Doescher, it developed some confidence. Our team is playing very well together. We still have a ways to go."
Brodhead seniors Danny Lewis and Kyle Wescott each added 12 points. Wescott hit two 3-pointers, but Kammerer said the key was his defense on Albany junior Isaiah Shell and holding him to just 13 points, which was well below his season average of 23 points per game.
"That was his toughest task of the year guarding Isaiah Shell," Kammerer said. "I thought he defended well."
Albany coach Derik Doescher credited the Cardinals' box-and-one defensive scheme.
"I thought Wescott did a good job in Brodhead's defensive scheme with the box-and-one," Doescher said. "Isaiah made some passes, but we just didn't have anyone step up and make a shot. Until someone steps up and hits a shot with some consistency we will continue to see that box-and-one defense. Teams would be silly if they didn't."
Albany junior Mitchell Kauk also scored 13 points and Grant Schoenenberger added 11 points.
"I think they played like a team more than we did," Doescher said. "They came ready to play and had a lot of energy from the start."
Monticello 48, Highland 37
HIGHLAND - Monticello junior Lucas Marty gave the Ponies a lift when he grabbed an offensive rebound and swished a fullcourt shot he tossed from 80 feet to beat the second-quarter buzzer.
Monticello coach Mark Olson said it's the first time he has been a part of a player hitting a fullcourt shot since he has been coaching. Olson said it was a big shot because it gave the Ponies a six-point halftime lead.
"He whipped it blind at the rim and it went in," Olson said. "I think that gave us some momentum for the second half."
Monticello sophomore Ben May scored a game-high 18 points to power the Ponies to a non-conference win over Highland.
Monticello (4-0) led by just five points to start the fourth quarter. The Ponies outscored the Cardinals 16-10 in the fourth to seal the win. Monticello senior Bryce Klitzke scored 11 points and Marty added 10.
The Ponies, which trailed only once in the game, hit seven 3-pointers led by May who made four. The Cardinals cut it to 37-34 with about 5:10 to go, but the Ponies closed the game with an 11-3 run.
"We did a good job of closing out on their shooters and making it tough for them," Olson said. "We also went to the line and hit some free throws to close it out."
Pecatonica 51, New Glarus 45
BLANCHARDVILLE - The Vikings got out to a fast start and they rode the momentum to a non-conference win over New Glarus.
"It was a big win for us," Pecatonica coach Matt Fink said. "We are trying to build a program. Any win we get is big. After talking to people, I don't know when the last time Pec beat New Glarus."
Pecatonica sophomore Drew Schliem scored a team-high 12 points and senior Jon Hendrickson had 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Vikings past the Glarner Knights. The Vikings (2-1) outscored the Knights 12-7 in the first quarter and had a six-point lead at the half.
"He's such a great athlete," Fink said of Hendrickson. "You let him go play and he will make plays for you."
New Glarus (0-4) was led by senior Gabe Noyce who scored a game-high 18 points. Teammate Martell Dixon added nine points. The Knights were plagued by some poor free throw shooting. The Knights shot just 9 of 24 from the foul line.
Pecatonica will play at Monticello on Tuesday and at Black Hawk on Thursday.
"Those are two tough conference games right out of the gate," Fink said. "That will give us a good indicator of where we are at."
