BRODHEAD - Senior middle hitter Carly Mohns and the Brodhead volleyball team weren't going to be denied in a regional championship match.
Mohns had 21 kills and three blocks to lead the Cardinals to a 25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-15 win over Laconia in a WIAA Division 3 regional championship match Saturday, Oct. 26. With the win, Brodhead (30-5) advances to a sectional semifinal and will play at Markesan at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.
"It was a great feeling," Brodhead coach Erin Kammerer said. "The seniors were very proud to accomplish that goal. When you get to the tournament their willingness to win and volleyball skills pulled them through. We are taking it baby steps until we can get there (state)."
The last time Brodhead made it to state was in 2008.
Brodhead senior Rachel Heller had nine kills and a team-high 22 digs Saturday. Junior Payton Wright racked up 25 assists and sophomore Kylie Moe added 12 assists.
Senior Jordan Halvorsen had four aces and sophomore Pickel added three blocks.
Monticello 3, Randolph 1
RANDOLPH - Fourth-seeded Monticello knocked off No. 1 seed Randolph in four sets 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19 to win a WIAA Division 4 regional championship.
It's the first sectional berth for the Ponies in 15 years. Monticello (18-3) had an astonishing 19 aces as a team in the regional final against the Rockets.
"We talked about doing something that hasn't been done in a long time," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "The girls were very excited. It was the most focused match we have played this year. There was no letdown. The girls kept their momentum, dedication and fire and it paid off."
Monticello senior Marissa Berg had a team-high 15 kills and five blocks. Junior Alyssah Kubly had 10 kills and senior Paige Dilley added seven kills.
Monticello senior Clare Bruns collected 29 assists and senior Claire Gietzel had 16 digs. Sophomore Jordan Garrison had 13 digs and five aces. Kubly also notched five aces.
The Ponies had nine aces in the final set and Garrison closed out the decisive set with an ace.
"We were very aggressive," Smice said of the Ponies' serving. "We practice that all the time. We will visualize that and it's paying off."
Monticello gears up for a sectional semifinal showdown with Catholic Central at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31. Catholic Central is looking to win its third straight state championship. The Hilltoppers have won the state title five of the last seven years including three straight from 2006-08.
Smice said in past years Catholic Central has had some dominant teams.
"Some say they are not the same team this year," Smice said. "I'm optimistic we can play with them. We have a ton of hitters. I think the mental side of Monticello volleyball is starting to show. I'm confident that we will compete with them."
