BRODHEAD - After picking up a triple-double in a Rock Valley crossover game with Evansville last week, J.J. Panoske nearly had another one in Brodhead's 70-38 blowout win over Palmyra-Eagle on Friday.
"It really didn't matter what I did as long as we won," Panoske said.
The 6-foot, 9-inch sophomore center came up one blocked shot short of the rare feat, finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds, and nine blocked shots.
"He did a nice job again tonight," Brodhead head coach Brian Kammerer said. "And the kids as a whole played well. We try to improve every week and hopefully we did that again tonight."
But it wasn't just Panoske who dominated the game - it was a complete team effort. Seven Cardinals scored in the win, with Ryan Miller (17 points) and Jacob Cole (13 points) helping share the scoring load.
In the first quarter, Miller scored eight points, Panoske six, and Cole added five. Cole and Micah Wallace (eight points) drained two big 3-pointers that stunned the Panthers (2-9, 0-7 RVC South). Brodhead (8-4, 5-3) led 24-9 after the first quarter and didn't show any signs of slowing down.
"It doesn't matter what the score might be, our guys are taking it one possession at a time. And that has led to some of the success we have lately," Kammerer said.
In the second quarter, Cole hit two more 3s, Panoske and Nick Jacobson dominated the boards and the offense continued to roll. Jacobson (six points) had five rebounds in the frame, and Panoske went into the half with 12 points, eight boards, and four blocked shots. In the game, Brodhead blocked 14 shots.
"What's going on right now is the kids are starting to believe in the whole team concept. "First we got a little preoccupied with who is supposed to be the scorer, and now we are just playing the game," Kammerer said. When we do that, we have the balance to have success."
In the second half, Brodhead continued to dominate. The Cardinals outscored Palmyra-Eagle 17-10 in the third quarter and 16-10 in the fourth. After sitting on five blocks for much of the second half, Panoske picked up four blocks in his last minute on the floor to give him his final of nine.
Kammerer pulled his starters for the final 3 minutes, 45 seconds of the game.
Brodhead can now look forward to its next game, which is Thursday, Jan. 29 at home against Edgerton (9-1, 5-1 RVC North).
"We just have to convert how we played tonight over to Edgerton," Panoske said.
