BRODHEAD - Junior point guard Kylie Moe wanted the ball in her hands to attack Oregon's press late in the fourth quarter with Brodhead trying to hang onto a slim lead.

Moe was up to the test scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to lead Brodhead to a 60-54 non-conference win over Oregon Monday. Oregon (10-7) is the second-place team in the Badger South Conference.

"We don't see this type of pressure throughout the game playing in the Rock Valley," Moe said. "They (Oregon) are a quick team that likes to run and gun. It's good for us to see different competition, speeds and paces. It's a big win for us."

Brodhead (14-4, 10-2 Rock Valley South) overcame a five-point deficit in the second half. The Cardinals used a 19-4 run from the third quarter that spanned into the fourth. Moe converted a conventional three-point play and drilled a 3-pointer with 1 minute, 48 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Cardinals a 41-39 lead. She then cashed in on another conventional three-point play with 1:12 to go in the third to give the Cardinals a 44-40 lead. The Cardinals led by as many as 10 points.

Brodhead lived at the free-throw line where the Cardinals scored more than half of their points (31 of 37).

"Everything we run goes through Kylie," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "When you have someone like that who is a scoring threat and a ballhandler, what she does for us is she opens things up for other players."

Oregon junior Leah Koopman snapped the cold spell draining a 3-pointer with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter to cut the Cardinals' lead to 50-43. Oregon junior Cassidy Nikolai hit a 3-pointer with about 2 minutes to go to slice the Cardinals' lead to 53-49. She made two free throws to cut the Cardinals' lead to two points, 53-51. The Cardinals were called for a five-second violation and the Panthers got another chance. Oregon senior Kelsey Jahn made just 1 of 2 free throws to cut the Cardinals' lead to 57-54 with 17.7 seconds to go. The Cardinals made 7 of 10 free throws in the final 1 minute to seal the win. Moe was 5 of 6 at the free-throw line in the final 45 seconds.

"We always want to make more free throws than the other team attempts," Moe said. "Free throws add up and help us win games."

Brodhead senior Brooke Boegli fouled out with 2:53 left in the fourth quarter. Moe played through foul trouble in the first half. Oregon senior Riley Rosemeyer scored a team-high 14 points, but fouled late in the fourth quarter. Koopman added 11 points for the Panthers, but also fouled out.

Brodhead senior Amber Pickel scored 18 points and freshman Erin Nyhus added 13 points.

"I think Erin is starting to feel more confident in pressure situations," Kammerer said. "For a freshman to step in and come through is phenomenal."

Early on, the game had the makings of one that would go down to the wire. Pickel had the hot hand in the first half for the Cardinals scoring 13 points. Despite having Moe playing just 1 minute of the second quarter after she was in foul trouble, the Cardinals' weathered a storm against the Panthers' press. The Cardinals had 10 of their 17 turnovers in the first half with the bulk of them coming with Moe on the bench. Pickel's scoring and the Cardinals making 13 of 15 free throws kept them within striking distance down just 29-28 to the Panthers at the half.

"Amber did a good job in the first half getting to the basket," Moe said. "She kept us in the game."

The Cardinals' second-half 19-4 surge proved to be a turning point. Moe said the key to the run was the Cardinals' defense.

"Our defense led to our offense," she said. "The run didn't seem like 19-4. It seemed like we had a one-point lead the entire game."

Kammerer gave credit to former coach Brad Pickett, who guided the Cardinals to state last year. Pickett is now the head coach at Stoughton.

"I give coach Pickett credit for the non-conference schedule he set up after they went to state last year," Kammerer said. "Playing those tough teams has got to help us down the stretch in conference play."
