BRODHEAD - McFarland's Benjamin Rounds drilled six 3-pointers and poured in a game-high 34 points to lead the Spartans to a 90-85 double-overtime win over the Brodhead High School boys basketball team Thursday night.

McFarland's Nolan Splinter added 29 points to help the Spartans hang on for the win.

The Cardinals (3-2, 1-2 Rock Valley South) led by 10 points with 4 minutes to go at the end of regulation. With 30 seconds left at the end of the second half, Brodhead senior Ned Slocum missed a contested jumper and the Cardinals missed two putbacks in the waning seconds.

"Once it got to overtime they scored first and it was tough to play from behind," Brodhead coach Nick Jarvis said. "I'm not sure on the rebounding ratio, but they outrebounded us."

Brodhead sophomore Brekan Day hit a pullup 3-pointer late in the first extra session to cut the Spartans' lead to two points. The Cardinals forced a turnover and Day hit a floater as time expired to tie the game to send it to a second overtime.

"We missed a few free throws down the stretch and didn't get some key rebounds," Jarvis said. "My guys played really hard."

Slocum scored a team-high 28 points to lead the Cardinals. Day scored 17 points and knocked down two 3-pointers.

McFarland jumped out to a 37-31 lead at the half. The Spartans won despite making just 18 of 30 free throws. Brodhead also struggled at the free-throw line, shooting 50 percent (11 of 22).

Brodhead's Parker Johnson scored 15 points, and Josh Pickel added 12 points.

"We talked about the fact there are stretches where it looks like we have a lot of varsity experience and there are stretches where we look like we have a lot of sophomores and juniors that don't have a lot of varsity time," Jarvis said. "I hope this will give us confidence that we can play with teams of that caliber."
