BRODHEAD - The Brodhead softball team picked up its first win of the season, splitting a doubleheader with Clinton Saturday.

After losing its fourth straight game 5-2 to Clinton in the first game of a doubleheader, Brodhead defeated Clinton 19-1 in the second game. With the split in the twinbill, Brodhead improves to 1-4 in the Rock Valley South.

In the Cardinals' 19-1 win Saturday, Brodhead pounded out 20 hits. Brodhead seniors Erin Kloepping and Cassie McGuire were each 4-for-5 to lead the Cardinals' hitting attack. Brodhead senior Payton Wright went 1-for-4 with a team-high six RBI. Junior teammate Amber Pickel went 3-for-4 and senior Taylor Gerlach was 2-for-3.

The Cardinals broke the game open with a six-run first inning and never looked back. Brodhead had five players with two hits or more. The Cardinals put the game away with a nine-run fifth.

Brodhead senior Brooke Boegli pitched a complete game to get the win, giving up one earned run on four hits. She struck out five and walked just one.

In the first game, the Cougars scored five runs in the fourth to pull out a 5-2 win. Wright pitched four innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out four and didn't issue a walk. Boegli pitched three shutout innings. She struck out two and walked one.

The Cardinals were limited to two hits - one hit each by McGuire and Gerlach.
