BRODHEAD - Both seniors Amber Pickel and Kylie Moe had a hot hand in the first half Monday to help the Brodhead girls basketball team roll to a 69-44 win over Dodgeville.

Pickel and Moe combined to score 30 points in the first half to propel the Cardinals to a 44-24 lead. Moe scored 15 of her game-high 23 points and Pickel had 15 of her 22 points in the first half.

Brodhead, ranked sixth in the WisSports.net Division 3 Coaches poll, improves to 10-1, 6-0 Rock Valley South. The win for the Cardinals comes on the heels of a 62-50 loss to Cuba City, which is ranked No. 3 in Division 4.

"I was a little worried with how we would respond after losing to Cuba City," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "I thought offensively we moved well. Kylie knocked down some shots, and Amber, what she does inside is she outhustles people and gets second-chance opportunities."

The Cardinals camped at the free-throw line, making 26 of 33. Pickel was 11 of 12 from the line and Moe was 9 of 10.

When Moe and sophomore Erin Nyhus got in foul trouble, the Cardinals switched to a 2-3 zone.

Kara Crowley scored 18 points to lead the Dodgers.

Nyhus and Morgan Cook each chipped in eight points for the Cardinals.

Albany 40, Palmyra-Eagle 31

PALMYRA - Albany attacked Palmyra-Eagle's 1-3-1 zone by working the ball inside out and the Comets pulled out a nonconference win.

"It was a gritty game where we grinded out every possession," Albany coach Adam Wamsley said. "We got the stops we needed to."

Freshman Libby Beck scored a team-high nine points to lead a balanced offensive attack for Albany, which improves to 2-10, 1-2 Six Rivers East.

"I think the key was we had good ball movement against their zone," Wamsley said. "It led to some good opportunities inside and outside. We hit some shots and that gave us a little momentum."

Albany senior Marley Malkow and freshman Payton Zurfluh each added eight points, and senior Sydnee Woyak chipped in seven points.

Mineral Point 80, Black Hawk 41

MINERAL POINT - Syd Staver scored a game-high 22 points and made three of the Pointers' seven 3-pointers to lead Mineral Point over Black Hawk.

"They are ranked No. 6 in Division 4 for a reason," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said of Mineral Point. "They are a great team with size and athleticism. It's not a great start to 2016. We knew this would be a tough one coming into the season. We really hope our kids embrace this and this helps us get ready for Juda on Thursday and Parkview on Saturday."

Black Hawk (5-4, 3-0 Six Rivers East) had more than 20 turnovers trying to break the Pointers' 2-2-1 press.

Black Hawk senior Aleigha Sigafus scored a team-high 17 points, and junior Sam Lovelace added nine points. The Warriors made four 3-pointers with one each from sophomore Brianna Hagen, senior Brooke Moore, senior Tatum Jackson and Lovelace.

Mineral Point's Clara Chambers scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

The Warriors were within 11 points late in the first half, but the Pointers cashed in on four straight turnovers to take a 20-point lead at the half.

"It was a momentum swing we never got back from," Flanagan said. "We just have to learn from our mistakes. You could worry about this and get kicked around again or we can come back and learn from this."

Shullsburg 57, Darlington 41

DARLINGTON - Shullsburg's 6-foot-1 post player Brianna Leahy exploded for a game-high 27 points to lift the Miners over Darlington.

Junior Taylor Jacobson scored 12 points to lead Darlington (2-7, 1-2 SWAL).

Shullsburg (9-0), the ninth-ranked team in Division 5, built a 30-15 lead by halftime.

Darlington junior Sadie Fitzsimons, sophomore Emma Crist, junior Taryn Rankin and sophomore Kennedy Rankin each added six points.
