Cardinals thrash Novas, Panthers cruise past Bulldogs

CUBA CITY - The Brodhead girls basketball team thrashed Milwaukee Academy of Science 97-15 Wednesday in the opening round of the Cuba City tournament.

Brodhead (7-0, 3-0 Rock Valley South) jumped out to a 33-0 first-quarter lead and extended it to 51-3 at halftime. The Cardinals had five players in double figures led by sophomore Carly Mohns, who scored a game-high 22 points.

Brodhead junior Brianna Hicks scored 18 points and sophomore Jordan Halvorsen added 13 points. Junior Mariah Ahrens added 12 points and sophomore Meg Duffield chipped in 10.

Juda 48, WILLIAMS Bay 19

PALMYRA - Juda girls basketball coach Curt Brown turned to his defense to break the game open as the Panthers cruised to a win in the first round of the Palmyra-Eagle tournament.

After leading just 6-3 after the first quarter, the Panthers went to a pressure defense and it paid off. The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 18-6 in the second quarter to build a 15-point halftime lead. Juda (7-1, 2-1 Six Rivers East) limited Williams Bay to just 10 points in the second half.

"We started off a little sluggish," Brown said. "The difference was we really turned up the defensive pressure."

Juda senior Ellen Kiser scored 13 points to lead the Panthers. Seniors C.J. Dunwiddie and Katlyn DeVoe each added nine points.

Mineral Point 57, Pecatonica 43

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Vikings are still searching for their first win after dropping a first round of the Pecatonica tournament to the Hilltoppers.

Pecatonica junior Michelle Francois scored 21 points to lead the Vikings. Pecatonica (0-8, 0-2 Six Rivers East) trailed by seven points at halftime, but the Vikings were outscored 31-24 in the second half. Pecatonica junior Lizzy Britt added nine points.
