MONROE - Lauren Hlubek looks forward to working on her golf swing mechanics each week.
Hlubek, a seventh grader at Monroe Middle School, is one of 48 junior golfers between 9 and 18 years old on the receiving end of a Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation scholarship, which gives junior golfers a discount for a membership to the Monroe Country Club.
The foundation covers the full $220 for a junior membership to the Monroe Country Club, for golfers enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program through the Monroe School District. For junior golfers not part of lunch programs, the foundation covers $145.
"It's great to have the discount because you can get kids out there for a cheaper price," Hlubek said.
Hlubek said she has been able to improve her chipping and putting.
"Those are things I struggle with," Hlubek said. "A lot of people think you bend your wrist when you are putting. You want to keep it straight."
Another junior golfer taking advantage of the lessons is Andrew Gobeli, 6.
"It's hard on the putting green, trying to put it in the hole," said Gobeli, adding that the best part of lessons has been teeing off and trying to hit a target.
Junior golfers worked on swing fundamentals including chipping at a target and putting Tuesday, July 2. The Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation memberships have almost doubled this summer from 26 last year to 48.
"It's just blossomed," Muranyi said. "It's just really taken off."
Muranyi started the junior golf foundation four years ago after he retired as the golf pro at the country club.
"I started it to promote golf and to get more kids golfing," he said. "We are just trying to give kids opportunities who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to get out there to learn golf."
Beginning this summer, parents can play up to 10 days with their junior golfer for an additional $250.
"We want to get some parents out there golfing too," Muranyi said.
The golf lessons are every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout the summer. Kids 10-17 can also test their skills at the Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation tournament on July 31. Todd Edwards, the current golf pro at the Monroe Country Club, and Monroe High School boys golf coach Braden Rindy assist with lessons, along with Dustin Huffman and Ryan Thompson.
"Everyone can't be there each day," Muranyi said. "We want to make sure we are never short."
The MMJGF is hosting a four-person golf scramble Saturday, July 13 as a fundraiser for the program, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at the Monroe Country Club. The registration fee is $75 and includes a golf cart, steak dinner and prizes. Among the prizes is $4,000 worth of Taylor Made golf clubs.
Muranyi said the scramble helps pay for the discounted junior memberships as well as passes for parents to golf with their children.
