MONROE - The 64th annual Monroe Badger Days kicks off today.

The two-day Badger Days serves as a fundraiser for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Athletic Department. The event includes golf, a theme party with live entertainment, appearances from the UW Marching Band, UW Spirit Squad, Bucky and the Badger Sports Preview Dinner that features several UW head coaches at the Ludlow Mansion on Tuesday.

The theme for this year's Badger Days is a "A Night at the Wisconsin Zoo." The event is sponsored by Colony Brands.

Colony Brands President and CEO John Baumann pledged in 2015 that Monroe Badger Days would fund $1 million in scholarships for UW athletes for the next five years.

"The Kubly family and Colony Brands are proud to have a 64-year legacy," Baumann said. "Since we have started sponsoring scholarships, people from Monroe Badger Days know exactly where their money is going."

Last year, Monroe Badger Days funded scholarships for former Wisconsin linebacker Vince Biegel, who was just drafted by the Packers, and Michelle Cheung, a Hong Kong native who was on the UW women's golf team. Monroe Badger Days also funded a scholarship for former UW volleyball player Lauren Carlini for two years.

A backyard party is planned at Pat Kubly's home, 621 14th Ave., from 4 to 10 p.m. today. There will be games, food and drinks. A dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Baumann said there are still tickets available for tonight's party at the Kubly home; they can be purchased at the Monroe Country Club or at Kubly's home.

Several tickets are left for the Badger Sports Preview Dinner on Tuesday and they can be purchased at the Monroe Country Club. Tickets for tonight's party are $60 and tickets for Tuesday's dinner at Ludlow Mansion are $75.

"I was weaned on Badger football and basketball," said Baumann who serves as emcee in tonight and Tuesday's parties. "It's a treat for me. It's a great perk of the job."

Proceeds from Badger Days go toward funding the UW Athletic Department and sponsoring scholarships. One such scholarship is the Wisconsin Athletics Endowed Scholarship, which supports student-athletes and other needs the department may have.

Baumann said Monroe Badger Days may have a surprise announcement on Tuesday after the dinner with Badger coaches, but he declined to share additional details.

Last year, Monroe Badger Days donated $117,730 to the UW Athletic Department.

Baumann said Monroe Badger Days would not be possible without the 40 volunteers who do all the planning every year and the numerous volunteers who help at the golf course, sell raffle tickets and assist with the parties.

"If it wasn't for all of those people this event would have stopped years ago," Baumann said.
