MONROE - Kyle Bruce and Dylon Wilde both carded exceptional rounds Monday in a dual golf match against Fort Atkinson.

Bruce carded a 2-over-par 36 on the front nine at Monroe Country Club and Wilde shot a 39. The Cheesemakers defeated the Blackhawks 217-221.

Bruce, a junior, started his round with three straight pars, but a double-bogey on the long par-4 fourth hole tripped him up.

"You have to always know that every hole is a new hole," Bruce said.

On the seventh tee, Bruce hooked his shot to the left and thought he lost his ball out of bounds. He hit several more shots from the tee, but later found his original ball in the middle of the fairway on the back side of the hill. The ball had ricocheted off of a rock next to a house along the course.

"I had hooked three out of bounds, but I found the first one. I got lucky there," Bruce said. "I was feeling good other than that."

Bruce finished the hole with a four, then birdied the eighth before shooting a bogey on the ninth. The round came just three days after playing what he called his best round of golf in his life. The junior was a medalist at the Beloit Invite, shooting a 73.

"I had a lot of confidence coming out of that. The competition was huge. Middleton was there, and they had just won the two-day Badger Shootout at University Ridge," Bruce said.

Wilde had nearly the opposite start on Monday. The senior lefty bogeyed the first and third holes before stringing together three straight pars.

"I strung a couple of pars together and started going good," Wilde said.

Playing alongside the hot-handed Bruce must have rubbed off on Wilde.

"It's really fun to watch him play. He makes every shot and is really creative when he plays," Wilde said. "I like to play off of him, it helps me a lot t see what he's doing and emulate that.

"I've learned to be a little slower with my back swing and staying square with the ball when I come through it. That helps it go straight or have a draw instead of a little bit of a fade every time."

Eric Timm shot a 44 for the Cheesemakers and Yossapron "Ice" Luengsaphitkul had a 46. Jessy Stagliano, Monroe's typical No. 3 player, struggled and carded a 52.

Fort Atkinson was led by Tyler Glass, who shot a 40.

Monroe hits the links again today on the road at Milton. On Wednesday the Cheesemakers (2-2 Badger South) welcome Monona Grove to town for the final conference match of the year.

"We just have to keep plugging away and see what happens," Bruce said.
