EDGERTON - The Brodhead volleyball team went 4-3 and finished in third place at the Edgerton Invitational Saturday.

For the four winning matches, Brodhead defeated Altoona 25-22, 25-18, Clinton 25-19, 25-12, Big Foot 25-15, 25-21, and Deerfield 25-21, 25-13.

For their losses, the Cardinals fell to Janesville Craig 25-18, 25-27, 15-11, Lakeside Lutheran 25-13, 14-25, 15-11, and Edgerton 25-15, 25-11.

Brodhead tied Big Foot and Janesville Craig for third, but the Cardinals were awarded the outright third-place finishers based on the best winning percentage - 62 percent of the three teams.

"This is a high quality tournament," Brodhead coach Erin Kammerer said. "Coming in, we gained some confidence. Lakeside Lutheran took first and we took them to three (sets). The experience we came out of this will hopefully give us some success later on."

Brodhead junior Abbey Johnson was named to the all-tournament team after racking up a team-high 52 kills, 90 assists, 60 digs and nine aces in the invitational. Senior Chandra Clark posted 42 kills and racked up 62 assists.

Kammerer said Johnson and Clark are getting better with each match.

"Chandra is a big part of our offense in the front row and she along with Abbey run our offense in the back row," Kammerer said.

Katie Goecks had 31 kills and Brooke Becsup added 30 digs.

"Brooke Bescup switched to libero and dug the ball really well," Kammerer said. "Katie Goecks had a big day for us. She put up a really strong block."
