Belmont 4, Monticello 3

MONTICELLO - The Ponies closed out the regular season with a non-conference loss to Belmont.

The Braves scored four unearned runs in the fourth off Monticello senior Michael Elzen. Belmont's Cam Carey and John Henry drove in two runs each on back-to-back hits.

Monticello made a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Wahl led off the seventh with a walk. Monticello junior Tyler Ritschard, who was 2-for-3, came through with an RBI single to drive in Wahl. Junior Lukas Kolasch then had an RBI single that scored Ritschard that cut the Braves' lead to 4-2.

After junior Trae Seffrood singled and a passed ball, the Ponies had runners on second and third and no outs. Junior Corey McGowan drove in the third run on a grounder to third. The rally ended when Michael Elzen flew out to right and senior Tyler Meier grounded sharply back to the pitcher.

"For the third time this week, we battled back late in the game which is great to see," Monticello coach Jason Pinnow said. "We left some runs out on the bases but you got to give Belmont credit for capitalizing on our mistakes in the 4th inning. It was a great game overall."

Meier went 2-for-3 with a double and Elzen was 2-for-4. Elzen pitched five innings and gave up four unearned runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.
