EVANSVILLE - The Brodhead-Juda wrestling team ran away with the WIAA Division 2 Evansville regional championship on Saturday.

The Cardinals racked up 228 points to earn a berth in Tuesday's Lodi team sectional over runner-up Evansville-Albany (189) and third-place Monroe (172). Sugar River finished sixth (109) out of seven teams. There were 16 area wrestlers who finished in the top two to secure individual sectional tournament berths.

"All 13 of our wrestlers scored," said Brodhead-Juda coach Tim Colden, who had the most wrestlers advance to the sectional in his 11 years of coaching. "Our kids wrestled well again. I think our depth helped. They showed up and I think they are peaking at the right time."

Brodhead-Juda had seven wrestlers qualify for Saturday's Division 2 Richland Center individual sectional tournament including sophomore Justin Sangermano (113), Coty Knudtson (120), Brady Colden (160), Hunter Colden (170), Gavin Baade (182), sophomore Reave Lincoln (220) and sophomore Logan Maurer. The Cardinals had five regional champions including Sangermano, Brady Colden, Hunter Colden, Baade and Maurer.

Monroe also had seven wrestlers qualify for the sectional tournament on Saturday including regional champions Aaron Hesgard (132), Kevin Klopfenstein (138) and Trevor Gorr (220). Senior Jesse Keizer (126), junior Ryan Hughes (160), senior Dusty Burkhalter (182) and junior Brett Zimmerman (heavyweight) each finished second place.

"It was about exactly what we were expecting," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said of getting seven wrestlers to the sectional. "We wrestled well for the guys we had. We did what we expected we would do."

Sugar River juniors Young-Chul Vetterli (152) and Jak Nelson (195) each won regional titles.

For Brodhead-Juda, Sangermano (25-10) pinned Clinton's Trent Kley in 3 minutes, 4 seconds. He won the championship when Sonny Schieldt had to scratch due to an injury default. Brady Colden (38-5) also cruised through the tournament. He pinned Edgerton's Dalton Walters in 4:40 and then pinned Clinton's Tyler Teubert in 43 seconds. In the championship match, Colden pinned Hughes in 5:00. Brady Colden avenged an earlier loss to Hughes in Belleville.

"Brady wrestled a good match," Tim Colden said. "Ryan is a good wrestler. You can't compare December to February."

Jackson said Hughes does a lot of scrambling and rolling around while wrestling; he got caught and couldn't come out on top.

Hunter Colden (43-0), ranked second in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll, went 3-0 to stay unbeaten this season. Colden is just one win away from setting a new school record for wins in a single season. Hunter Colden pinned Evansville-Albany's Tyler Grant in 2:31 and in the title match he defeated Clinton's Mitch Wellnitz 12-3.

"He's a pretty smart kid," Tim Colden said of his son Hunter. "He's been wrestling for a long time. He knows you have to take it one match at a time."

Baade (26-5) opened the tournament by pinning Edgerton's Jacob Grams in 1:57 and pinned Burkhalter in the semifinals in 2:32 for the championship. Maurer, (41-2) ranked third, pinned Edgerton's Nick Yeadon in 50 seconds. In the title match, Maurer defeated Zimmerman 7-3. It's the fourth time in the last two years that he has defeated Zimmerman. Maurer was able to get a takedown and a two-point near fall that proved critical in the match.

"He (Zimmerman) has to stay away from the throws," Jackson said. "That takedown and two-point near fall was the difference in the match. He has come a long way since the beginning of the year."

The Cheesemakers also had some dominant performances. Hesgard (36-8) at 132, pinned Sugar River's Evan Dorn in 1:03 and then pinned Clinton's Jose Rosales in 3:41. In the championship match, Hesgard pinned Evansville-Albany's Jordan Meyer in 5:21. Klopfenstein, (40-4) ranked fourth, pinned Sugar River's Anthony Chiarello in 3:45 and then defeated Beloit Turner's Max Andrews 4-1 for the title. Trevor Gorr, (43-2) ranked fourth, pinned Sugar River's A.J. Helbach in 40 seconds and then pinned Lincoln in 1:17 for the championship.

Keizer went 3-1 at the regional after overcoming an elbow injury. He pinned Clinton's Jaks Teubert in 1:16. Keizer then lost to Evansville-Albany's Skyller Mullen, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. He bounced back and pinned Edgerton's Zach Dillman in 2:38 and pinned Brodhead-Juda's Dalton Oborne in 2:31.

Sugar River got strong performances from Vetterli and Nelson. Vetterli (31-10) pinned Beloit Turner's Chad Hester in 4:31 to seal a regional championship. Teammate Nelson edged Monroe junior Troy Gorr 8-5 and then pulled out a thrilling 5-4 win over sixth-ranked Ben Reed of Evansville-Albany. Troy Gorr finished third and just missed qualifying for the sectional.

Hughes pinned Beloit Turner's Jacob Hayderi in 3:42 and took second place by rule since he already beat Hayderi. Burkhalter pinned Sugar River's Bryan Laube in 1:13 and then knocked off Evansville-Albany's Ben Benedict 8-2. After a loss to Baade, Burkhalter took second place by rule by virtue of a win earlier in the tournament against Benedict. Zimmerman (34-9) pinned Evansville-Albany's Dustin Bjugstad in 1:01 and took second place by rule.

Knudtson went 3-1 in the tournament for the Cardinals. He pinned Beloit Turner's Nick Olszewski in 1:30. Lincoln took second by rule after an earlier win against Evansville-Albany's Cody Meyer.

Brodhead-Juda will wrestle Dodgeville in the Lodi team sectional at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. If the Cardinals win, they would wrestle the winner of Lodi and Mauston at about 7:30 p.m. with a trip to state on the line.

"We have seen them (Dodgeville) in a tournament setting this year," Tim Colden said. "Tournament settings are different than dual meets. They are stronger in the lower weights and we are stronger in the upper weights. I think it will come down to who doesn't get pinned. I think we have a chance and we can definitely compete."
