BRODHEAD - The Brodhead girls track team won the Jim Church Invitational Friday edging Clinton 136-135.
"It was a big surprise," Brodhead-Juda girls track coach Ken Peterson said. "I didn't think we would be able to do that. They beat us by 20 points at the Clinton Relays last week."
Peterson considers Clinton the favorite to win the Rock Valley South Conference. He didn't think the Cardinals would contend for the conference, but that changed Friday.
"I didn't feel like that until tonight," Peterson said of competing for a conference championship. "Now, I'm thinking we have a chance."
Albany finished sixth place at the six-team invite. In the boys' meet, Clinton won the team title over Beloit Turner 134-121. Brodhead-Juda finished fourth and Albany was sixth (24).
Brodhead junior Carly Mohns won the long jump (15 feet, 3 inches) and took second in the shot put (35'5"). Paige Hoesly won the triple jump (30'2") and took second in the long jump (14'6").
"(Mohns) can do anything," Peterson said. "She is such an athlete. She could be in any event."
Brodhead-Juda's Alicia Condon finished first in the discus (100'6") and third in the shot put (33'7.5"). Senior Mariah Ahrens took second in the high jump (4'8").
Peterson said he was surprised by the Cardinals' dominance in the field events.
"We just did a fantastic job in the field events," he said. "It was nice to see. (Hoesly) scored some big points for us."
The Cardinals' 3,200 relay team of Taylor Bluemel, Morgan Adkins, Camy Klar and Meg Duffield won the race with a time of 11 minutes, 2.1 seconds, which was about four seconds ahead of Big Foot.
"That is one of our best events," Peterson said.
Duffield finished second in the 200 and Emily Kuschel took second in the 100 (:15.5).
Albany junior Bailey Hlavachek won the 800 (2:35) and teammate Chantel Rogers took second in the 400 (1:07.1).
In the boys competition, Jordan Douglas won the triple jump (39'2") and took second in the 300 hurdles (:45.2). Brodhead-Juda junior Dylan Johnson finished second in the 800 (2:15) and junior Jacob Harper was second in the 400 (:56.6).
Albany's Aaron Johnson finished second in the 1,600 (4:56.3). Albany junior Logan Webb took third in the discus (111'8").
The Cardinals won the 1,600 relay (3:46) and took second in the 400 relay (:50.2). Brodhead-Juda also finished third in the 3,200 relay (8:52.7).
