EVANSVILLE - The Brodhead girls basketball team got out to an early lead and never looked back Tuesday night against Evansville, winning big over the Blue Devils, 63-29.

Brodhead was in control from the start and held a 16-2 lead after a quarter of play. The Cardinals expanded their lead to 40-15 at halftime and 59-21 after three quarters. Evansville won the final quarter 8-4.

Nine Cardinals got in on the scoring action, with three scoring in double figures. Carly Mohns led Brodhead, with 13 points, while both Taylor Douglas and Rachel Heller chipped in 10.

The win maintains Brodhead's perfect season, improved them to 17-0 overall. Brodhead, ranked second in Division 3 by the Associated Press, is back in action on Friday with a conference game at home against Palmyra-Eagle.

Darlington 62, Iowa-Grant 22

LIVINGSTON - The Darlington girls basketball team picked up a win over a young Iowa-Grant team Tuesday night, as the Redbirds knocked off the Panthers.

Darlington led 20-2 after a quarter of play and increased that lead to 36-8 at halftime. The Redbirds outscored the Panthers 26-14 in the final two quarters.

"Iowa-Grant's a young team," said Darlington coach Riley Fitzsimons. "We came out in full court man-to-man trap. We really didn't give them a chance to set up offensively. Offensively, we attacked the basket and shot 81 percent from the line, which is always good."

Cassidy Chambers was the leading scorer for Darlington with 22 points.

"She shot the ball very well tonight," Fitzsimons said of Chambers. "She's a scorer, that's what she does. She's six away from 1,000 points in her career. Hopefully she can get that on Friday against Mineral Point."

Darlington (14-4, 8-3 in the SWAL) was coming off a 39-35 loss to Riverdale last Thursday. Fitzsimons said that he hopes his team learned from that game.

"I think we responded well," Fitzsimons said. "We knew they weren't one of the powerhouses in the conference, but neither was Riverdale. That Riverdale game was a wake-up call. In a way, that loss was good for us. We won't, hopefully, overlook anyone anymore."

Argyle 53, Highland 30

ARGYLE - A suffocating press enabled the Argyle girls basketball team to shut down the Highland offense on their way to a win at home.

Argyle held the Cardinals to six points in each of the first three quarters. The Orioles led 36-18 entering the fourth, and outscored the Cardinals 17-12 in the final period to top off the victory. Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said his team's defense opened up many opportunities for their offense.

"We ran a really nice press tonight," he said. "We had 18 steals. Kim Pink had six of those steals. We were able to convert off those turnovers. I just thought our defensive effort was very good."

Jessica Treuthardt scored 14 points to lead the Orioles. She was joined in double figures by Rachel Tollakson, who had 13.

"Tollakson shot the ball very well. She shot 7 of 8 from the free throw line," Ritschard said. "Treuthardt finished around the rim much better. She went up stronger to the hoop tonight."

Argyle improved to 10-8 with the win. The Orioles have a tough matchup in conference-leader Barneveld on Thursday. Ritschard said that his team needs to continue improving on the defensive end as they approach tournament play.

"We just need to keep sticking to our defensive principles, getting better within our press," he said. "Teams in conference know how we play, so we need to make sure we're making proper adjustments."
