ORFORDVILLE - The Brodhead Cardinals capped off their Rock Valley South Conference title with a 49-45 win over the Orfordville Parkview Vikings in the final regular season game for both teams Thursday.
The game was close throughout, with the Cardinals holding a 25-23 halftime edge and a 36-30 lead after three quarters.
Sophomore Taylor Douglas and freshman Carly Mohns each scored 12 points to lead the Cardinals. Senior Mariah Mohns added 11 points and sophomore Amanda Pickel drained three 3-pointers to chip in nine points for Brodhead. The Cardinals were able to cling to a slim lead by making 12 of 19 free throws.
Brodhead captured the conference title with a 13-3 record. Parkview finished in second place with an 8-7 mark.
Brodhead, 15-7 overall, is the No. 2 seed in the Division 3 Clinton Regional and drew a first round bye. They will face the winner of the Tuesday regional quarterfinal between third-seeded Parkview and sixth-seeded Big Foot on Friday.
Darlington 71, Southwestern 64
HAZEL GREEN - The Redbirds were 30 of 37 from the free throw line en route to capping a second-place finish in the SWAL Conference.
"That's the line score of the night," Darlington coach Mike Chambers said. "That told the story of the game. They kept fouling us and we hit our free throws."
Southwestern was whistled for 28 fouls in the game, while Darlington was called for 19 infractions.
Cassidy Chambers led the Redbirds in scoring with 19 points. Four Darlington players reached double figures in the game with Amy Jorgenson (17 points), Elizabeth Mathias (13) and Carley McDonald (10) joining Chambers. Mathias was 11 of 13 from the charity stripe and McDonald finished with 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double.
Southwestern opened the game on fire and took a 20-12 lead into the second quarter. That advantage was trimmed to 35-33 by halftime and a 23-12 run by Darlington in the third quarter changed the momentum for good.
"It was a real sluggish game for us. Southwestern took it to us at the start," Mike Chambers said.
Fennimore defeated Iowa-Grant to claim the SWAL outright at 13-1. Darlington finished 12-2.
Pecatonica 58, Monticello 56
BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica senior Alisha Esselstein made a driving layup with five seconds left to give the Vikings a thrilling win.
Esselstein finished with a game-high 26 points, five rebounds and four steals. Pecatonica sophomore Lizzy Britt scored 14 points, had six rebounds and five steals. Pecatonica senior Ellie Gifford added 11 points and hit three 3-pointers.
The Ponies jumped out to a 14-11 first quarter lead and led by two points at halftime. The Vikings outscored the Ponies 22-13 in the fourth quarter to take the lead.
Monticello junior Desiree Marty scored a team-high 13 points and senior Taylor Pfeuti added 12 and junior Becky Nelson chipped in 11.
Barneveld 57, Argyle 27
ARGYLE - The Barneveld Eagles shut out Argyle 15-0 in the first quarter and cruised to a 30-point win over the Orioles in a Six Rivers East Conference finale.
Junior Danielle Treuthardt connected on four 3-pointers to lead the Orioles in scoring with 12 points.
Argyle finished the regular season 3-19 overall and 0-12 in the Six Rivers East.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday in Barneveld, as the Orioles are the No. 7 seed and the Eagles are the No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 5 Evansville Regional.
New Glarus 72, Marshall 43
NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights used their final game of the regular season as a way to pick up some steam for the postseason.
Head coach Megan Scheele talked to her players about building momentum before the tournament and got just that with a win over the Marshall Cardinals to finish the regular season 3-7 in the Capitol South and 9-13 overall.
Junior Alycia Atwell led four players in double figures with 17 points. Senior Lauren Narveson drained four 3-pointers and scored 14 points, while sophomore Alexis Hanson (11 points) and senior Chelsea Holler (10 points) led the attack for New Glarus.
"We had some inside-out going on," Scheele said.
The Glarner Knights were also successful at the free-throw line, where they went 18-23 for the game.
"We always try to get to 80 percent," Scheele said.
New Glarus is the No. 4 seed in the Division 4 DeForest Regional and will host No. 5 seed Pardeeville in a regional quarterfinal Tuesday.
