CUBA CITY - Four Brodhead girls scored in double figures Thursday night, as the Cardinals knocked off Scales Mound in the first round of the Cuba City Classic.

Kylie Moe led Brodhead with 14 points. She was joined in double figures by Taylor Douglas (12), Rachel Heller (11) and Carly Mohns (10).

Brodhead got off to a fast start, as they outscored Scales Mound 24-9 in the first quarter. The Cardinals scored 39 in the first half and took a 16-point lead into the locker room. Scales Mound kept it interesting, outscoring Brodhead by 10 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to knock off the Cards.

Brodhead coach Brad Pickett was happy with his team's first half performance but said they need to make sure they play a full game.

"We were pretty aggressive coming out at the start," he said. "But in the second half things got pretty close. We need to make sure we play 32 minutes, not 16."

Brodhead improved to 7-0 with the victory.

Juda 40, Destiny 37

JUDA - After entering the final quarter deadlocked at 31, the Juda girls basketball team surged ahead of Milwaukee Destiny for a 40-37 win.

Senior Jessica Rackow led the way for the Panthers with 12 points, scoring three points in the crucial fourth quarter. Fellow senior Brittany Moe added 11 points.

Sophomore Molly Marass also added four of her six points in the fourth quarter.

"In the fourth quarter she got the steal to make it a two-possession game," Juda coach Curt Brown said. "Those were points we don't really rely on, so when we get them it's definitely a bonus."

After taking the lead, the Panthers ran the clock down for more than a minute to put the game out of reach.

Leading the way for Milwaukee Destiny was Brittany Williams, who scored a game-high 15 points. However, the Eagles' leader was held scoreless in the final frame.

Brown said the Panthers contained her and the other Eagles players with a zone defense, to keep them from driving, which was key to counter Destiny's athleticism.

"We were trying to keep them grounded and on the floor," Brown said. "We really slowed them down and packed it in."

The Panthers (3-6) will travel to take on Belmont on Jan. 3.

New Glarus 47, Columbus 30

COLUMBUS - The New Glarus girls basketball team picked up a solid win over Columbus Thursday night, as the Glarner Knights beat the host Cardinals, 47-30.

"They played very well tonight," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "We got into it right away. It's always tricky over winter break, but they played great tonight."

New Glarus jumped out to an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Columbus won the second quarter, but New Glarus controlled the second half, outscoring the Cardinals by 9.

New Glarus junior Courtney Feller drained five 3-pointer's and led all scorers with 21 points.

New Glarus (4-4) returns to action on Jan. 4, when they will host Belleville.

Pecatonica 54, Weston 29

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica girls basketball team didn't look like a team still searching for their first win of the season Thursday night, but they got it in convincing fashion, defeating Weston in the first round of their own tournament, 54-29.

"It's the elephant in the room," said Pec coach Matt Bakkum of his team's previously winless record. "It's good to get it. It's a new year on the calendar. Hopefully this will jump start us. Maybe we can string some together."

Three Vikings scored in double figures. Michelle Francois led Pecatonica with 14 points. Lizzy Britt and Emily Fargo each chipped in 10 for the Vikes. Bakkum said it was nice to see that kind of balanced scoring.

"That's always been our goal," he said. "We've usually had one or two kids consistently score for us. You're always looking for that third or fourth scorer."

While it was nice to get that first win, Bakkum said his team still needs to work on putting together a complete game.

"We played great defense for about two-thirds," he said. "We were in the double-bonus in the first quarter. We were putting them at the line, keeping them in it longer than they should have."

Pecatonica (1-6) will look to win the championship of their tournament tomorrow against undefeated Fall River.

Argyle 48, Southwestern 45

ARGYLE - The Argyle girls basketball team did just enough to pull out the win over Southwestern Thursday night, holding off the Wildcats in a close game, 48-45.

The first quarter proved to be the difference, as Argyle jumped out to an 11-7.

"We got off to a quick start," Orioles coach Kurt Ritschard said. "We got some turnovers early off our press."

Senior Kim Pink led Argyle with 13 points. Kayla Ostby had 12, and Jessica Treuthardt added 10 for the Orioles.

"Late in the game we had some players step up," Ritschard said. "Pink had all 13 in the 2nd half. Ostby made some big free throws. We got some good minutes from some role players."

Southwestern's Emma Droeszler led all scorers with 22. One key for the Orioles was containing the rest of the Wildcats. The next leading scorer for Southwestern had 7 points.

"We did a very good job on the outside," Ritschard said. "We had nobody physically to matchup with Droeszler... most of her points came on offensive rebounds. On the perimeter, though, I thought we did very well."

Argyle evened their record at 4-4 with the win. The Orioles are off until Jan. 3 when they will travel to Black Hawk for a Six Rivers East Conference clash.
