VERONA - The Monroe Brewers moved within one game of Verona in the Home Talent Baseball League's Western Section after the Brewers handed the two-time defending champions their first loss of the season 8-2 Saturday.
Ben Korth pitched a complete game five-hitter and helped the Brewers notch their fifth win in the last six games. He gave up just two runs, struck out five and walked four.
"For us, it's a big win," Brewers co-player manager Lon Scheuerell said. "It's a confidence booster. They are the two-time defending champions and have been the best team in the league and section."
Monroe had five players with multi-hit games including Mike Cleary (3-for-5), Adam Siegenthaler (2-for-4), Rooney Janecke (2-for-4), Matt Busjahn (2-for-4) and Scheuerell (2-for-4).
The Brewers (6-2) jumped out to an early lead. Janecke, the Brewers co-player manager, singled in the fourth inning. He came around to score when Verona overthrew the play at third.
Cody Boals came through with an RBI single in the fifth. He stole third and scored when the ball sailed into left field to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead.
With the Brewers leading 3-1 in the seventh inning, Korth pitched out of a bases loaded one out jam. He got Matt Peetz to ground into a fielder's choice that cut the Brewers' lead to 3-2. Korth ended the threat by getting A.J. Stoffels to fly out.
The Brewers extended their lead in the eighth. Janecke and Cleary each singled. Scheuerell delivered a two-run single to give Monroe a 5-2 lead.
The Brewers broke the game open with a three-run ninth. Mitch Marty reached on an error. Cleary then hit an RBI single. Janecke followed with an RBI double. Brett Mulhall then delivered an RBI single.
Monroe looked to be on its way to another win Sunday as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Argyle.
Monroe's Justin Hahn led off by beating out an infield single and he stole second. Janecke hit a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Hahn. After Brewers starting pitcher Cody Boals recorded two outs, heavy rain came and he struggled to find his grip on his pitches. He walked two and hit a batter before the game was called.
The game against Argyle hasn't been rescheduled yet.
