BELLEVILLE - Sugar River sophomore Garrison Woods isn't afraid of heights and doesn't shy away from big numbers.
Woods won three events - the triple jump (40 feet, 10 1/4 inches), long jump (20-0) and high jump (6-0) - as the host Raiders held off Oregon 145-118.5 in a five-team meet at Belleville. Pecatonica-Argyle (43), Albany (42.5) and Monticello (23) finished third, fourth and fifth.
"I just like to see how far you can glide through the air off three jumps and one hop," Woods said of the triple jump. "I'm all about big numbers."
As a freshman, Woods qualified for state in the triple jump and long jump. He sailed past the competition Tuesday.
"I'm hoping to break the school records in the triple jump, long jump and high jump," he said. "My goal is 44 feet in the triple jump and above 21 feet in the long jump. With the success we have had over the last 12 years winning 12 conference championships, we are confident winning events at home."
Sugar River senior Jon Beckman won the 110-meter high hurdles (16.43) and the 300 hurdles (42.67). Teammate Josh Stern took second in the 300 hurdles (43.97).
"Jon is just really quick," Sugar River coach Dan Schettler said. "He isn't the strongest. He really has to depend on his quickness to get over the hurdles."
The hurdles have been a signature event for the Raiders dating back to state champions Scott Wick (1996) and Cody Mussehl (2003).
"We have a strong hurdling tradition," Schettler said. "We have been lucky to have kids who have wanted to hurdle."
Pecatonica-Argyle senior Wyatt Massey finished first in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 49.2 seconds) and took second in the 800 behind Sugar River junior Ryan McCoy (2:04.84).
"We have had three meets in about six days," Massey said. "I'm just a little tired. With the wind in the 800, I was pretty happy with a 2:06. It's just a tuneup."
McCoy teamed with Tucker McMahon, Riley Miller and Michael Schmitz to take first in the 3,200 relay in 8:52.91, edging Albany's squad of Juan Cid, Jose Ramirez, Gavin Ruef and Kyle Woyak (9:02.5).
"We have a good team," McCoy said of the 3,200 relay. "Everyone is back except Dennis (Haak). It's a nice meet early in the year to see where we are at and to get into shape."
Albany's Logan Webb took first in the discus (109-11) just ahead of Pecatonica-Argyle's Nick Huffman (108-1).
Pecatonica-Argyle's Nathan Loyd won the 400 (:54.21) by about one second ahead of McCoy (55.23). Albany's Jose Ramirez took third (56.55). Loyd added a second-place finish in the 200 (24.68).
The Raiders swept the top two spots in the 3,200. Senior Wesley Morgan finished first (11:17.30) and Callen Rogers took second (11:20.03). Sugar River's Cole Dockter won the pole vault (11-0).
Cody Bigler finished second in the long jump (18-1), Stern took second in the high jump (5-8) and Craig Thompson was second in the shot put (36-6).
Dockter teamed with Joey Beil, Bigler and Ethan Gassman to finish second in the 400 relay. The Raiders' 800 relay team of Beil, Bigler, Alex Gocht and Zach Meyer took second in 1:42.96.
Schettler was excited the Raiders won the meet, but that wasn't his main focus.
"I just want to get more times and marks on kids to see where they will help the team," he said.
