Boys run wild at Wisconsin Heights

BLACK EARTH - With prom festivities on deck, the Monroe boys track team wasn't going to just coast Friday.

Monroe boys track coach Dave Hirsbrunner shook up his lineup and the Cheesemakers steamrolled their way to the Wisconsin Heights Invitational title by dismantling Lodi, 213-107, for the championship.

"With prom being this weekend and that taking extra energy from people and focus away from track, we didn't take everyone or set up to score a lot of points," Hirsbrunner said.

Hirsbrunner said seniors Tad Christen and Garrett Wyss were left home to rest.

Monroe had several athletes step up, and the Cheesemakers rolled by winning nine events. Monroe senior Dan Vale ran on the winning 800- and 400-meter relays. Vale teamed with Bryan Tordoff, Mason Goff and Max Minogue to win the 800 relay with a time of 1 minute, 36.70 seconds.

In the 400 relay, Vale teamed up with Alex Bartlett, Mack Brunker and Lucas Goetz to win the race with a time of :46.99. Vale added a second-place finish in the 100 (:12.20).

Monroe senior Cullen Sampson won the 800 (2:06.21) and the high jump (6 feet). Sophomore Michael Barrett also cleared 6-0 in the high jump.

Senior Brett DeNure won the 400 (:51.43) against Lodi senior Keith McBride and Wisconsin Heights' Andy Yasick, who he may see down the road at the sectional.

"That was a big statement for Brett in the 400," Hirsbrunner said.

In the 3,200 relay, DeNure teamed with Cody Plenge, Gavin Wels and Joe Pecora to win with a time of 8:50.78.

Monroe swept the top three spots in the 300 hurdles and in the shot put. Monroe sophomore Caleb Ahrens won both the 110 hurdles (:16.87) and the 300 hurdles (:44.24).

Sophomore Jeff Hill cleared 13-0 in the pole vault for second place and senior Aaron Lehman made 12-0.

"He's been steadily getting better," Hirsbrunner said of Lehman.

Monroe senior Luke Voegeli won the shot put (48-9) and senior Lucas Leu took second in both the shot put (47-1) and the discus (136-7).

"What makes us a better team is we are two and three deep at a lot of events," Hirsbrunner said.
