BOYS BASKETBALL: Ponies pull off big win over Barneveld

BARNEVELD - The Monticello boys basketball team has established itself as a Six Rivers East Conference title contender. The Ponies did so by rolling to a 73-59 win Saturday over Barneveld, which was ranked fourth in the Wissports.net Coaches Poll.

In a battle of unbeaten conference teams, the Ponies gained the early, inside track for a conference title by hitting eight 3-pointers. Monticello (4-1, 4-0 Six Rivers East) opened up a 20-point lead, outscoring Barneveld (3-2, 2-1) 25-12 in the third quarter.

Monticello sophomore Tyler Ritschard scored 18 points to lead the Ponies. Senior Brandon Holz added 15, including a trio of 3-pointers.

In other games Saturday:

ALBANY 56, CAMBRIDGE 52

CAMBRIDGE - The Comets rallied from a five-point third-quarter deficit to beat Cambridge.

Albany senior T.J. Zweifel scored a team-high 14 points, including four 3-pointers to help the Comets win the game in the last 1 minute, 40 seconds.

The Comets (2-3, 1-1) made 5 of 5 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory over the Blue Jays in a non-conference game.

Zweifel was one of three Comets in double figures, joining senior Tyler Bauman (12 points) and Bryce Hulbert (10).

CUBA CITY 77, DARLINGTON 65

CUBA CITY - Darlington sophomore Alex Erickson scored a game-high 22 points, but the Redbirds couldn't hang on to an early lead against the Cubans.

Darlington (1-5, 0-3 SWAL) outscored the Cubans 22-12 in the first quarter, but the Cubans answered. Cuba City outscored the Redbirds 21-9 in the second.

The Redbirds made eight 3-pointers, including four by Erickson. Darlington's Brett Hardyman scored 12 points and Tanner Havens added 11.

PALMYRA-EAGLE 63, JUDA 55

PALMYRA - Juda had Palmyra-Eagle on the ropes, but couldn't close the deal.

The Panthers (1-5, 1-2) led Palmyra-Eagle 45-39 at the end of the third quarter. Palmyra-Eagle outscored the Panthers 24-10 in the fourth quarter to cap a comeback victory.

Juda senior Beau Benner scored a game-high 21 points and Tyler Pierce added 15. Juda senior Jacob Ramos chipped in nine, which came on a trio of 3-pointers.
