BOYS BASKETBALL: New Glarus denied shot at title

MARSHALL - New Glarus's boys basketball team lost a barnburner to Marshall on Thursday, 71-68, losing a chance to put the teams in a first-place tie in the Capitol South.

Seniors guards Jake Bast and Cassidy Flannery saved their best games of the season for the Knights' most important. Bast finished with 28 points, including five 3-pointers, while Flannery had 25 points and four 3s. Fellow senior Logan Lockard added 10 points and the Knights' 10th 3-pointer in the loss.

Both teams started slow, with Marshall leading 10-8 after the first quarter. By halftime, New Glarus had fallen behind 27-19.

However, in the second half both teams started running the floor and hitting shots. The Knights brought the score back to within 45-42 headed into the fourth, but Marshall stood its ground.

New Glarus (14-4, 6-3) was called for 23 fouls and finished 10-for-18 from the free throw line. Marshall (15-3, 8-1) had 16 fouls and was 13-for-21 from the line. Marshall had only five players score in the game, all in double digits.

New Glarus next plays at Waterloo on Monday.

DARLINGTON 54, MINERAL POINT 40

DARLINGTON - The Redbirds got solid contributions from around the lineup and pulled out a quality win over the Pointers.

"We got scoring contributions from seven guys," Darlington head coach Michael Hopkins said. "Mineral Point played pretty tight on (Alex) Erickson, but he kicked the ball out and our other guys did their jobs well."

Despite being heavily guarded, Erickson finished with 17 points. Ethan Pickett scored 12, Brett Hardyman and Tucker Wiegel each had seven and Tanner Havens added five.

"We have to give credit to our defense. They did an outstanding job. They held Mineral Point's second highest scorer two just four points, and he had been averaging 15," Hopkins said.

BARNEVELD 46, ARGYLE 27

ARGYLE - The Golden Eagles came out playing heavy defense against the Orioles, and Argyle couldn't stay in the game for very long.

Barneveld jumped out to a 9-3 lead after the first quarter and held a 28-7 advantage by halftime.

Matt Cash scored nine points for the Orioles and Taylor Saalsaa added seven.
