MONROE - Carl Vanko scored two of the Monroe Blues' four goals in the third period as the Blues skated to a comeback 8-5 win over the DePere Deacons on Saturday in Great Lakes Hockey League action.

Blues rookie goalie Justin De Maa got off to a rough start with DePere scoring on the first shot. The Deacons were up 3-0 with 8:34 left in the first period when Drew Komplin scored on assists from Vanko and Brad Giccopoulos. Two minutes later, the Blues were on the board again with a goal from Anthony Gomez assisted by Cody Hurd and LP Govain. DePere led 4-2 at the end of the period.

DePere scored what turned out to be its final goal in the first 35 seconds of the second period.

The Blues responded with two goals in the second period and four goals in the third. Those goals were scored by Vanko (two), Andrew Ether, Gottlieb Brandli III, Giccopoulos and Komplin.

Giccopoulos led the Blues with four assists. DeMaa had 37 saves.

Monroe will have two home game this weekend at SLICE. At 8 p.m. Friday, they host the Eagle River Falcons, and at 7 p.m. Saturday they host the Marquette Mutineers of Michigan.
