EVANSILLE - The Evansville-Albany football team won its game against Pewaukee with a strong effort on both offense and defense.

Blue Devils coach Ron Grovesteen said the players did a great job of overcoming a large school for a win when they toppled the Pirates 14-0 Friday in the WIAA Division 3 first-round playoff game.

"It was a great team at the line," Grovesteen said. "Both the offense and defense did a great job and made a difference for us."

Grovesteen said the rushers were pivotal in the win as well, making the defense "honest" as they scored the only two touchdowns of the evening. Senior Ryker Brown ran 40 yards for a TD before a kick by Sam Topel put the Blue Devils ahead 7-0.

Junion Brennen rushed for 98 yards on 14 carries for Evansville-Albany.

Sophomore quarterback Zach Mielke had four completions for 40 yards. Grovesteen said he was happy to see the young player take charge on the field.

"It takes a leader," Grovesteen said. "Mielke had a good game. He's improving as a play caller."

Mielke scored on 6-yard run and another extra point by Topel put the Blue Devils up 14-0.

Evansville-Albany (10-0) advances to play at Waukesha Catholic Memorial (8-2) on Friday.

Darlington 42, Pardeeville 0

DARLINGTON - Junior fullback Hunter Johnson rushed for 166 yards and scored four touchdowns to power Darlington past Pardeeville in a Division 6 game.

"He's a talented young man with his speed and size he's able to knock over would-be-tacklers," Darlington coach Scott Zywicki said of Johnson. "It makes him tough to bring down."

Darlington (10-0), ranked No. 1 in the WisSports.net Division 6 coaches poll, advances and will host Mineral Point (8-2) in a Level 2 playoff game Oct. 30. Mineral Point rallied to stun Dodgeland 41-40 in a thriller.

Darlington senior running back Conrad Blosch had a 3-yard TD run early in the first quarter to open the scoring for the Redbirds. Thirty-two seconds later, Hunter Johnson had a 16-yard TD run to give the Redbirds a 13-0 lead. He added a 5-yard TD run in the second quarter and his cousin, Trevor Johnson bolted for a 50-yard TD run about midway through the second quarter to take a 28-0 lead. Hunter Johnson scored on a 1-yard plunge with 34 seconds to go in the second quarter to give the Redbirds a 35-0 lead at the half.

Trevor Johnson rushed for 112 yards on 10 carries and scored one touchdown. Darlington junior quarterback Jared Meister was 1 of 3 passing for 17 yards with one interception.

The Redbirds limited the Bulldogs to 87 total yards and just 44 on the ground. It's the second straight shutout for the Redbirds' defense.

"It was satisfying to get kids on don't always play out on the field," Zywicki said.

Catholic Central 49, Black Hawk 22

BURLINGTON - Black Hawk lost its footing with a bad snap in the second quarter that gave Burlington Catholic Central a chance to score from the 1-yard line.

Bad luck kept coming for the Warriors (6-4), who struggled just before halftime. Catholic Central's Cole Kelnisken mounted four rushing touchdowns in the second quarter alone, notably running 87 yards into the endzone in the Division 7 game.

Black Hawk took the initiative at the beginning of the game, scoring the first points with a pass from Brody Milz to Jett Rufenacht. Milz had two completions for the night with one interception. The team also had five fumbles and recovered two.

The train stopped with the sophomore's successful 15-yard touchdown. Central added five touchdowns to their total before the break.

Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said the team did play well, despite a bit of crazy play in the second quarter. He noted that the team's center hurt his hand and tried to switch to his left during snaps, but could not adjust so the backup had to be brought in. However, he said he was glad to see the Warriors do good things in a bad situation.

"It was a good game to watch," Milz said. "But things kind of got away from us in the second quarter. I think they played with a lot of spirit, and overall did well."

He pointed specifically to the second half. After the halftime break, he said the Warriors came back onto the field ready to play.

Though the team was outscored, the Warriors' Colby Argall ran five yards into the endzone. Senior Jacob Quinn led his teammate with a rushing touchdown over five yards. Teammate Alex Wheeler ran in the two-point conversion.

However, it was not enough to stop Catholic Central. The home team knocked in one more huge play with a 40-yard rushing touchdown and a successful extra point to tack more numbers onto the board before sending Black Home defeated.
