EVANSVILLE - Monroe senior Sydney Mathiason had a big performance with 19 kills, seven blocks, eight aces and 16 digs, but the Evansville volleyball team spoiled the Cheesemakers' opener by winning in five sets Tuesday.
"They have a new coach, and they (Evansville) treated it like a scrimmage," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "We were going to play five sets regardless so everyone could get playing time. We thought it was going to be a quad with two other teams. I didn't want to go into Thursday against Monona Grove not having played a whole match."
The Blue Devils clipped the Cheesemakers in the first set 27-25 and the second set 25-21. Monroe battled back to win the third set 25-22 but lost the fourth set 25-12. The Cheesemakers closed the opener with a bang knocking off the Blue Devils 25-9 in the final set.
"We did a lot of really great things at the net," Witt said. "We just need to work on our communication and passing more."
Monroe sophomore Cassi Gersbach and freshman Zoee Pond each had seven kills. Monroe senior Alexis Allen had a team-high 27 assists and senior Alysha Witt had 21 assists. Senior Meredith Hose added 14 digs for the Cheesemakers.
"I'm glad we played the match to get into a routine and work the nerves out," Witt said.
Monroe will host Monona Grove in a Badger South Conference match at 7 p.m. Thursday.
