Here is the Monroe YMCA Blaze weekly football report:
Eight-grade
A strong defensive effort led the Blaze eighth-grade team to a 28-0 win over New Glarus/Monticello at the New Glarus High School field.
The defensive effort limited New Glarus/Monticello to negative yards rushing and 47 yards passing on 4 of 7 passing. The Blaze rushed for 190 yards on 41 attempts.
The Blaze scored after driving on their first possession when Rhett Katzenberger ran in from 1-yard out. After a fumbled New Glarus/Monticello punt attempt was recovered, the Blaze again scored on a 3-yard run by Chase Hellenbrand. After a blocked punt by the Blaze, Monroe scored again on a 35-yard run by Cody Wolf. That ended the first half with the Blaze leading 20-0.
The entire 3rd quarter was consumed with an 11-play drive covering 70 yards and a 7-yard touchdown run by Cody Wolf. Joe Dahmen kicked two extra points.
In Week 2, the eighth-grade Blaze turned in another strong defensive performance in a 36-0 win over Belleville/Albany at the Monroe High School field.
The Blaze limited Belleville/Albany to negative yards rushing for the game. The Blaze scored on a 15-yard run by Jacob Flannery, a 10-yard catch by Matt Coplien from Chase Hellenbrand, a 21-yard run by Rhett Katzenberger, a 54-yard run by Chase Hellenbrand, and a 1-yard run by Jarod Barenklau.
Hellenbrand was 2 for 4 on extra points and Turner Jensen was 1 for 1. Each kick was worth two points.
For the game, Blaze ran 45 times for 300 yards and completed 2 of 4 passes for 26 yards and a touchdown.
Seventh-grade
The Monroe Blaze seventh-grade continued their 2010 youth football season this past Saturday with an 11-8 loss at home against Pecatonica/Argyle.
The Blaze started off strong with McKenzy Foley running around end for 43 yards on the first play of the game. From there, Monroe was able to control field position until scoring a touchdown on their third possession when Jaron Kuester threw an 11-yard pass to Tanner Thompson. Foley kicked the extra-point for an 8-0 lead
Pec/Argyle was able to tie the score late in the first half after a couple of Blaze defensive penalties on fourth downs kept the Pec/Argyle drive alive.
Strong defense continued in the second half as neither team was able to mount any sustained drives. Unfortunately for the Blaze, a late turnover provided Pec/Argyle the needed field position to eventually kick the game winning field goal as time expired.
The Blaze only mounted 80 yards of offense over 28 plays while Pec/Argyle mustered 170 yards on 52 plays (31 pass attempts). Defensively, all 19 players made the stat sheet by recording a tackle or recovering a fumble. Thompson led the way with 10 tackles, followed by Kuester at 9. Traiten Gorr and Randy Joerger recovered fumbles while Jarod Amacher and Gogin were able to intercept passes.
With the loss, the 7th Grade Blaze record now stands at 1-1 (0-1 in league play).
Sixth-grade
The Monroe Blaze sixth-grade team began its 2010 campaign with a 31-0 win over the McFarland Spartans.
The Blaze held McFarland scoreless and to only one yard of offense.
Jake Kind led the team on defense with six solo tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Alex Tordoff added an interception for a touchdown and also hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Elmer.
Ryan Miller led the offense on the ground, scoring two touchdowns on 15-yard and 65-yard run plays.
In Week 2 the Blaze defeated the Verona Wildcats 22-0 on Brat Fest weekend.
The Blaze won the toss and took the ball straight down the field when Tyler Elmer punched the ball in from 2 yards out. Alex Tordoff added the PAT kick. On the next Verona possession Tordoff intercepted the ball on the Verona 41-yard line.
On the next Blaze drive on a third and long Tyler Elmer hooked up with Kyle Krebs on a 40-yard bomb to keep the drive alive. Later in the drive Elmer found Cole Murray for a 7-yard TD pass. Tordoff added the PAT kick.
The Blaze's final score came when Carter Sawdey busted loose for a 60-yard TD run.
Verona had their next drive cut short when Alex Tordoff made his second interception. Later in the game with Verona driving Ross Oxenrieder forced the ball loose on a Verona running back and Tyler Elmer recovered the loose ball. Verona's last possession was cut short with Tordoff's third interception of the day.
The Blaze will travel to Cross Plains for a 9 a.m. game with St. Francis next week.
Fifth-grade
After winning their home opener last weekend by a score of 14-0, the fifth-grade Blaze football team went on to win another game this week by a score of 35-6.
The offensive line did an awesome job this week as the team was easily able to move the ball down the field on every possession and scored four touchdowns and four extra points by running the ball into the end zone.
Brayden Zettle, Sam Kind, David Keegan and Jamaar Manor combined for 28 of the 35 points on the ground, while quarterback David Keegan completed a pass to Jake Meier for a touchdown and another pass to Drake Ingold for an extra point.
The team's first away game is at 8 a.m. Saturday in Argyle.
