VIROQUA - Darlington junior Nellie Black shot an 86 at the Viroqua Invitational and finished in second place.
The Redbirds as a team shot 420 and finished seventh.
Black finished in a three-way tie for second, but she earned second place after parring the No. 1 handicap hole and two other golfers bogeyed the hole.
"She just played really smart golf," Darlington-Cuba City coach Gary Ringen said. "In the weather conditions, she played the course under control. She putted and chipped well. She kept herself out of trouble."
The Redbirds played through the rain for the first 11 holes and excelled. Darlington had four golfers finish with lifetime best rounds on a soggy course.
There were several larger schools at the invitational including Onalaska, the defending WIAA Division 1 state champions, and Holmen. The Redbirds finished third at the Viroqua Invite last year, but Onalaska and Holmen just had their junior varsity teams competing.
"This year they sent their big guns," Ringen said. "They didn't let the distractions bother them. We just ran into some good golf teams. I'm really pleased. It was successful. It was a good experience."
Darlington sophomore Shelby Poss finished with a 103.
Senior Ali McCauley struggled, finishing with a 107.
"Ali was just off to the right all day in the rough and behind the trees."
Freshman Naomi Black shot a 124 and junior Erica McComish carded 138.
