LANCASTER - Darlington-Cuba City capped its impressive girls golf season by sending two players - sisters Nellie and Naomi Black - to sectionals.

Nellie Black, a senior, shot a 12-over-par 84 and tied for fifth at the Lancaster Country Club in a WIAA Division 2 regional while Naomi, a sophomore, carded a 90, which tied her for 11th.

"They played really well," Redbirds head coach Gary Ringen said. "We had probably the toughest sectional in our division in the state with Edgewood, Edgerton, Lancaster and McFarland. Nellie played with Brooke Ferrell, who is probably the best golfer in the state."

Ferrell, a sophomore from Edgerton, led the field with a 1-over-par 73. Four Edgewood players followed, all shooting 84 or lower. Edgewood has won state in each of the last four years and won the regional by 44 strokes over Edgerton. Darlington finished fifth with an overall score of 401, 81 shots back from Edgewood.

"We shot our average. I was real happy. Our girls played well," Ringen said.

At sectionals, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Yahara Hills West in Madison, the top two teams and top two individuals qualify for state.

"In golf, anything can happen, so we'll see," Ringen said.

The sisters likely won't be in the same pairing, but the eight individual qualifiers will tee off at 10 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. at sectionals.

Senior Erica McCormish shot a 113, junior Shelby Poss carded a 114 and sophomore Kayla Paquette had a 118 for the Redbirds.

Darlington-Cuba City (27-10) closed out the regular season with a pair of dual wins, defeating Mount Horeb by one stroke Monday, 194-195, and Southwestern Tuesday 194-247.
