MADISON - Darlington senior Naomi Black shot a 90 in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 state tournament on Monday and then headed back to Darlington for the "Sound of Music" play practice in which she has the lead role.

After the first round, Black is in a five-way tie for 13th place at the Cherokee Country Club.

"I was just really expecting to go out there to play my game and see how I could do," Black said. "I'm definitely looking to make an improvement. I'm happy where I'm at."

Black isn't intimidated golfing at the state tournament.

"It's a whole lot easier now," she said compared to when she made it to state as a sophomore. "I'm more comfortable with my game and the level of competition."

Black shot a 47 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine.

"For the wind and cold conditions she played really good," Darlington-Cuba City coach Gary Ringen said.

She triple bogeyed No. 15 after her iron shot went into the swamp.

"She had a beautiful long drive, Ringen said. "She was going to lay up onto the green with an iron. She got it up in the wind and it ended up in the swamp. It was kind of a disaster."

Black bounced back with a par on No. 16 and a par on No. 17 and a bogey on No. 18.

"She really shook it off and finished strong," Ringen said.

With a strong round today, she could finish in the top 10.

"She could make up some strokes with her putting," Ringen said.
