SOUTH WAYNE - Senior Sammy Lovelace had a match-high 22 kills to lead the Black Hawk volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 victory over Pecatonica in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal Tuesday.

"They (Pecatonica) are a really good team," Black Hawk coach Rachel Wolff said. "To be able to beat them in three, I'm very thankful for that."

Black Hawk junior Hannah Herbst had 18 assists. Sophomore Sydney Delzer posted four blocks, and Lovelace notched three aces.

"I think our passing was more on target and much better than earlier in the year," Wolff said. "I think our game is a lot sharper than even a couple weeks ago."

Black Hawk advances to a regional semifinal and will play at Juda on Thursday. It will be the fourth time this season the Warriors have played the Panthers.

"It's never easy playing Juda," Wolff said. "They are an incredibly scrappy team, and they have great servers. We have to go in there and be aggressive. It will be hard going into their gym. Hopefully, we can compete and put up a fight."

Pecatonica's Taetum Pagel had eight kills and five digs. Senior Liz Tisch dished out 17 assists, and junior Grace Keast added five digs. Junior Melody Burnett and Ninah McKeon each posted two blocks.

"We knew they had seen some stiff competition in the Trailways Conference," said Juda coach Scott Anderson, whose team improved to 11-9. "We did a nice job of digging and covering the floor. We extended a lot of volleys. That is our mantra. That is what we do."

Juda will host Black Hawk in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Juda senior Chelsea Burkhalter and junior MacKenzie Byrne each had 11 assists. Senior Alexis Goecks added 18 digs.

Johnson Creek 3, Monticello 1

MONTICELLO - Once junior Courtney Kammes was injured, Monticello coach Scott Smice had to juggle his lineup, and Johnson Creek pulled out a four-set win over the Ponies in a regional quarterfinal.

Kammes twisted her ankle early in the first set and didn't return. Johnson Creek rolled in the first two sets 25-13 and 25-17. The Ponies pulled out a tight third set 25-20. However, Johnson Creek clipped the Ponies in the fourth set 27-25.

"It was unfortunate we had one starter go down after she (Kammes) twisted her ankle four points into the first set," Smice said. "That's not taking anything away from Johnson Creek. The first two games I had to find some different combinations. The kids played with a lot of energy. They fought back. We got some energy in the third set and that carried over into the fourth set. Unfortunately, their season came to an end tonight."
