MONTICELLO - The Monticello High School volleyball team pulled out a thrilling first set but couldn't hang on to the momentum, and Black Hawk rallied to knock off the Ponies in four sets.
Monticello (3-5, 1-4 Six Rivers East) slipped by Black Hawk 25-23 in the first set. The Warriors responded by winning the next three sets 26-24, 25-4, 25-13.
"They (Black Hawk) played pretty well all night," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We just forgot some of our fundamentals. We had a little attitude issue. It carried over to the third set. We tried to right the ship, but we lost all momentum."
Black Hawk senior Aleigha Sigafus had a team-high nine kills, and junior Sam Lovelace notched seven aces. Senior Kayla Sigafus had a team-best six blocks, and senior Brooke Moore dished out 13 assists.
Monticello junior Bri Graber posted five kills and junior Jessie Garrison had 13 assists. Monticello's Chandler Hansen racked up 27 digs and had three aces. Junior teammate Brittany Disch had three blocks to lead the Ponies.
ARGYLE 3, ALBANY 0
ALBANY - Sophomore Ashley Bruehlman powered Argyle to a 25-5, 25-21, 25-10 victory over Albany.
Argyle (7-2 overall) remains unbeaten in the Six Rivers East Conference at 4-0.
Bruehlman had nine aces, 10 digs, four kills and two blocks.
Kayla Butler-Paulson had 12 assists for Argyle.
BARNEVELD 3, JUDA 0
JUDA - The Panthers fought Barneveld tough but were swept 25-20, 25-19, 26-24.
Serving played a pivotal role in the first set. Juda built a 20-17 lead but Barneveld served out the set. The Panthers (7-3, 3-1 Six Rivers East) had five service errors in the set.
"We dug well and played a lot of long rallies but couldn't get over the hump," Juda coach Scott Anderson said of the match.
"We were competitive. It was a good team effort."
Alexis Goecks led the Panthers with 18 digs. Sara Jordan added 13 and Chelsea Burkhalter 10. Those three also tied for team-high kills with three each.
Taylor Owens had nine aces for Barneveld, and Teagan Pickarts had 10 assists and eight kills.
WATERLOO 3, NEW GLARUS 0
NEW GLARUS - Waterloo posted a 25-11, 25-21, 25-16 victory over the Glarner Knights.
"We've been working on less hitting and serving errors and had major improvements in that area tonight," New Glarus coach Kelsey Schmit said. "The girls were aggressive and played hard against a good team."
Maddie Macht led New Glarus with 11 kills, eight digs and two aces.
Alexis Nealis had 20 assists, and Vanessa Narveson added seven digs.
