Black Hawk takes second in Six Rivers tourney

MONTICELLO - The Black Hawk volleyball team placed second in the eight-team Six Rivers Tournament.

Black Hawk won three of six sets played in pool play to take second in their pool to reach gold division play, which included the top two teams from each of three pools. In pool play, Black Hawk split sets with Juda, winning the first 25-20 and falling in the second set 25-19, River Ridge beat the Warriors 25-19, 25-14 and then Black Hawk rolled to a 25-11, 25-21 victory over Highland.

Black Hawk beat Darlington in three sets in the gold division semifinals, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14. In the championship match, River Ridge topped the Warriors 25-11, 25-21.

"River Ridge is a very good team," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We saw Black Hawk, Juda and Pecatonica. Our conference is wide open based on what I saw Saturday in the tournament and in summer league play. I still think Argyle is the team to beat."

Black Hawk sophomore freshman Bailey Butler had a team-high 22 kills for the tournament. Bailey's sister, Hannah, had 20 kills and five blocks in the tournament. Senior Hannah Herbst racked up 48 assists.

Juda outlasted Highland in three sets, 25-18, 22-25, 15-7, to win the silver division, which was made up of the third- and fourth-place teams from each pool.

Monticello went 1-2 in pool play. The Ponies edged Belmont 25-22, 26-24, Darlington defeated Monticello 25-22, 25-15, and Pecatonica knocked off the Ponies 25-19, 25-23.

Highland defeated Monticello in the first round after pool play 25-15, 25-21.

River Ridge beat Pecatonica to reach the title match.

Monticello junior Abby Wicker had 41 kills and 10 blocks in the tournament.

"She did a fine job for us as a middle hitter," Smice said of Wicker.

Junior Hannah Zanow posted 28 kills, and junior Alyssen Noriega had 21 kills and a team-best 87 digs for the tournament. Sophomore Miah Brokopp had a team-high 32 assists.

"Hannah and Alyssen did a great job as outside hitters," Smice said. "Alyssen may be moving to libero."



Brodhead second

JANESVILLE - Brodhead finished second in the gold division of the 14-team Viking-Cougar Invitational on Saturday.

After going 6-1 in the invitational Friday, the Cardinals went 3-2 Saturday. Brodhead defeated Walworth Big Foot 25-14, 25-18 and beat Janesville Parker 25-18, 25-13. Brodhead knocked off Elkhorn 25-13, 25-19. The two losses for the Cardinals on Saturday were to Janesville Craig and Notre Dame. Janesville Craig edged the Cardinals 21-25, 25-18, 15-6. Notre Dame also topped the Cardinals in three sets, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10.

Brodhead junior Abbey Johnson had 84 kills, 89 digs, 28 aces and 154 assists in the invitational and was named to the all-tournament team.

Brodhead senior Chandra Clark racked up a team-high 89 kills, 94 assists and had four blocks in the invitational.

Brodhead's Alexis Oliver notched 15 aces.
