Black Hawk softball survives Fennimore

SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk softball team survived to live another day, escaping with a 4-3 win over Fennimore in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

"It's a great way for our seniors to end their high school career at home with a big, close win," Black Hawk coach Jim Baumgartner said. "We didn't get a lot of hits, but the ones we did get were sure big."

Fennimore limited the Warriors to just three hits. Black Hawk sophomore Hannah Herbst reached on an error in the first inning. She reached second on a passed ball and stole third and home to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

"She's been manufacturing runs like that all year," Baumgartner said of Herbst.

Black Hawk sophomore Lauren Schultz had a key RBI single in the second and senior Brooke Moore had a clutch two-out, two-run double in the second to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead.

Black Hawk senior Rachel Ritschard pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up two earned runs on four hits. Ritschard struck out seven and walked one.

With the win, Black Hawk advances to play No. 2 state-ranked Juda-Albany. Juda-Albany is the No. 1 seed and will host Black Hawk in a regional semifinal at 5 p.m. today in Juda.

"We are going into the game with nothing to lose," Baumgartner said. "Juda-Albany is ranked No. 2 in the state for a reason. We are going to play hard and see what happens."



Parkview 1, Brodhead 0

ORFORDVILLE - Brodhead sophomore Azzy Steiner tossed a five-hit gem, but Parkview slipped by the Cardinals 1-0 in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

Steiner pitched six innings and gave up just one run and struck out three. Brodhead, the No. 11 seed, almost pulled off the upset of sixth-seeded Parkview. Steiner kept the Vikings at bay until they scored one run in the fourth inning. Brodhead out-hit Parkview 7-5.

Brodhead senior Kalli DeLorme and sophomore McKayla Hayes each had two hits.

Waterloo 14, New Glarus 12

WATERLOO - New Glarus junior Kelly Fredrickson did everything she could hitting in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal game, but the Glarner Knights lost a slugfest to Waterloo 14-12 on Tuesday.

Fredrickson went 3-for-4 with five RBI to lead the Knights. New Glarus pounded out 16 hits and had five players with multi-hit games.

The Pirates had a seven-run third inning to take a 9-7 lead. The Knights would not go away. New Glarus scored one run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to tie the game at 12. The Pirates scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.

New Glarus junior Grace Moen went 3-for-5 and senior Jessica Van Dusen was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Junior teammate Devon Boll finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and junior Maya Kramer was 2-for-5 with one RBI. Junior Ashley Judd also scored three runs.

Van Dusen pitched three innings and gave up nine earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out one and walked five. Sophomore teammate Riley Parker pitched three innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits.



Highland 11, Pecatonica 1

HIGHLAND - Bailee Rose and Karen McMannes combined tossed a one-hit shutout to propel Highland top an 8-0 win over Pecatonica in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

Rose pitched 6 1⁄3 innings and struck out 11. The only hit for the Vikings came from senior Clara Moen who finished 1-for-3.

Rose went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Brittni Mueller was 2-for-4 with two RBI. McMannes went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

In a Division 4 regional quarterfinal game, 10th-seeded Argyle upset seventh-seeded Potosi 12-7 and Riverdale beat Darlington 7-4. Southwestern knocked off Monticello 15-0.
