SOUTH WAYNE - Sophomore Jen Wellnitz scored 10 points and senior Kate Quinn added nine to lead the Black Hawk girls basketball team to a 39-18 win against Albany in Six Rivers East Conference play Thursday.

Black Hawk held Albany to two points in the first quarter while successfully shooting over the Comets' zone defense to take a 14-2 first quarter lead.

"We certainly were doing some good things on offense and we had a solid effort on defense," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan of his Warriors, ranked No. 2 in Division 5. "Against Albany, we had to do things right."

The Warriors (6-0, 2-0 Six Rivers East) built a 24-8 halftime lead and increased it to 35-15 after three quarters.

Junior Cassidy Bump scored nine points to lead the Comets (1-7, 0-3).

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights enjoyed a 33-29 halftime lead but couldn't hold it in a Capitol Conference crossover game.

The Blue Devils outscored New Glarus 18-10 in the third quarter to take a 47-43 lead they wouldn't lose.

"We committed too many turnovers in that quarter," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said.

Late in the fourth quarter, New Glarus got to within 52-51, but costly two turnovers prevented the Glarner Knights from taking the lead.

"It was a very good learning experience," said Scheele. "We'll figure it out."

Senior Alycia Atwell topped the Knights (2-4) with 18 points, junior Anya Schween had 14, and sophomore Courtney Feller added 10.

Darlington 63, Pecatonica 41

Chambers connected on four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 19 points.

Jorgenson knocked a pair of 3-pointers and had seven assists on her way to 18 points. Scott grabbed 15 rebounds to go with 14 points for the Redbirds (4-3), who bolted to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter.

"We really ran the floor well," Darlington coach Mike Chambers said.

"On defense, we really rotated well and limited their opportunities."

Junior Michelle Francois was the leading scorer for Pecatonica (0-7) with 14 points.
