SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk freshman Bailey Butler knocked down four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points to help the Warriors cruise to a 79-47 win over Argyle in a WIAA Division 5 regional championship game Saturday.

Black Hawk (25-0), ranked No. 1 in the Division 5 Associated Press state poll, raced out to a 45-20 lead at the half. The Warriors used a press defense to set the tone that led to turnovers and a couple of 10-second calls.

"A lot of it had to do with our press," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "We were pretty solid with our press."

With the win, Black Hawk advances and will play Central Wisconsin Christian in a WIAA Division 5 sectional semifinal at Verona High School at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Warriors made 12 of 22 shots from behind the 3-point line.

"We shot the ball well from the perimeter," Flanagan said. "There have been some games where we have had to go to the rim. When a team packs it in, it's nice to be able to hit those (3-pointers). We got some open looks and we made them. In a big game situation, you have to find a way to knock down shots."

Black Hawk sophomore Hannah Butler added 11 points, and senior Hannah Herbst chipped in 10. Both sophomores Natalie Leuzinger and Kristen Knapp had 8. Every Black Hawk player got time on the court, and 12 different players scored for the Warriors. Knapp and sophomore Maddy Huschitt each hit two 3s.

Argyle junior Jena Saalsaa scored 20 points, and junior Kirsten Ostby added 19. Both players for the Orioles did most of their damage in the second half. Saalsaa scored 13 of her 20 points in the second half, and Ostby scored 10 of her 19 points after the break.

"I felt like for most of the game we did a really good job of taking away their primary scorers," Flanagan said. "Argyle kept battling."

Black Hawk now has three days to prepare for a showdown with third-seeded Central Wisconsin Christian.

"They have some size with some big kids on the interior," Flanagan said. "Barneveld was able to speed them up and force some turnovers. We will have to force the tempo and make it a fullcourt game. We don't want to get into a halfcourt game with them where they can use their size."

Darlington 57, Mineral Point 53

DARLINGTON - Junior Kaylee Meyers scored a game-high 17 points, and Darlington rallied from a halftime deficit to clip Mineral Point in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday.

It marks the third time this season the Redbirds have defeated the Pointers. It wasn't easy this time. Mineral Point led 30-27 at the half. The Redbirds outscored the Pointers 30-23 in the second half.

Darlington junior Casey Glendenning added 10 points. Teammate Brenna McDonald added 9, and junior Kathleen Mathias chipped in 8.

This is the second straight year Darlington (19-4) has advanced to the sectional. Second-seeded Darlington will play top-seeded La Crosse Aquinas in a sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday in Richland Center. La Crosse Aquinas is the same team that beat the Redbirds in a sectional championship game last year.
