SOUTH WAYNE - Coming off of a short holiday break, coach Mike Flanagan and his Black Hawk girls basketball team returned to form Friday with a win over visiting Argyle, 48-42.
Flanagan and his team found themselves trailing by six points at the end of the first half but were able to make some changes at halftime to respond with a solid second half effort.
"We made a couple of adjustments defensively, which allowed us to put together a run," he said. "But we also got them in the bonus early in the fourth and we were able to capitalize on our free throws."
The Warriors went 10 for 11 from the charity stripe to compile a 21-point fourth quarter that put them ahead of a relentless Orioles team.
"They (Argyle) played a tough game for us tonight," Flanagan said. "At this point in the season these games become very important."
Jen Wellnitz scored a game high 22 points for the Warriors, while fellow senior Michelle Flanagan contributed 11 points.
Junior Kylie Johnsen led the way for Argyle with 18 points. The Orioles (2-3, 1-3) host Beloit Turner on Friday, Jan. 3.
Belmont 64, Albany 24
BELMONT - Friday night was a struggle for the Albany girls basketball team as they lost to host Belmont 64-24.
The Braves raced out to a 34-12 first half lead and didn't look back in holding the Comets to only 12 points throughout the rest of the game.
Marley Malkow had 10 points for the Comets, who have a Saturday game Saturday, Jan. 4 against Clinton.
Juda 40, Calvary Christian (Ill.) 33
WILLIAMS BAY - The Juda Panthers came through with an impressive holiday tournament showing on Friday to beat Calvary Christian 40-33.
The Panthers put together a strong second half as they entered halftime trailing by two points. After trading buckets throughout the third quarter, the Panthers were finally able to pull away in the fourth by hitting key free throws, outscoring Calvary Christian 15-6.
"We made our free throws in the fourth, (and) that is what sealed the win for us tonight," said Panthers coach Curt Brown.
Freshman Chelsea Burkhalter led Juda with 11 points, while fellow seniors Tabatha Davis and Molly Marass each added nine and six points respectively.
Brodhead 61, East Dubuque (Ill.) 35
CUBA CITY - The Brodhead Cardinals ran away from East Dubuque (Ill.) in the Cuba City Classic Holiday Tournament on Friday by a score of 61-35.
Kylie Moe led all scorers with 24 points.
Monticello 62, Beloit Turner 49
CAMBRIDGE - Contributions from a number of players piloted the Monticello girls basketball team in a 62-49 tournament win over Beloit Turner on Friday.
Alyssah Kubly led the Ponies with 21 points. Also scoring in double figures were Samantha DeVoe (14 points) and Jordan Garrison (11 points).
