CASSVILLE - In a battle between two of the state's top ranked teams, Cassville pulled out a win against Black Hawk Monday.

Cassville (11-0, 5-0 Six Rivers West), ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Division 5 state poll, jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the first quarter. Cassville's Ty Kartman scored a game-high 18 points and Ryan Kirschbaum added 16 points for the Comets who led 33-18 at the half.

"I liked our effort," Black Hawk coach Corey Manlick said of the Warriors coming back from a 15-point deficit. "They battled. They fought through some adversity with foul trouble."

Black Hawk junior Heath Butler scored a team-high 14 points and senior Seth Butler added 11 points. With the loss, Black Hawk, ranked No. 6, drops to 8-3, 4-1 Six Rivers East.

With the Comets clinging to a 43-39 lead in the fourth quarter, Black Hawk's Heath Butler made a basket, but was called for a charge. If it would have been an defensive foul, he could have cut the Comets' lead to just one point.

"That changed the momentum in the game," Manlick said. "We were making a run. We dug ourselves too big of a hole early on."

Black Hawk would only play Cassville again if both teams made it to the state championship game. The Warriors will now look to finishing off a heated conference race.

"Our focus is to maintain our place in the conference and to keep getting better," Manlick said.

Shullsburg 56, Argyle 43

SHULLSBURG - After a competitive opening quarter, the Argyle boys basketball team's offense stalled in the second on its way to a 56-43 loss to Shullsburg, Monday.

The Orioles were unable to connect on a single field goal in the second quarter after they began the period trailing by only three points, 18-15. Shullsburg limited Argyle to 1 point in the period and took a 26-16 lead into halftime.

"(There's) a lot of length on Shullsburg's side, and we just didn't impact the basket like we needed to," Argyle coach Scott Noll said. "(We) settled for a lot of jump shots."

Noll said he was encouraged by the way his team competed early.

"In the early first quarter, ball movement and getting the ball up the floor was working for us," he said. "We hit some open shots, and unfortunately, we were kind of living on hitting our outside shots and that kind of fizzled out for us."

The Orioles were led by seniors Christopher Severson with 18 points and Alec Truethardt with seven.

John Meyer led the way for Shullsburg with 18 points.

Parkview 64, Juda 48

ORFORDVILLE - For two quarters, Juda was in the driver's seat to pick up its second win of the season.

Juda (1-12, 0-6 Six Rivers East) led Parkview by one point at the half before the Vikings came back to beat the Panthers 64-48. Parkview outscored Juda 45-28 in the second half to seal the win.

Juda senior Patrick Bergum and junior Cory Segner each scored a team-high 15 points.

Parkview was led by Garrett Reinhardt who scored a game-high 23 points.
