BLANCHARDVILLE - The first round of the Six Rivers East Conference volleyball showdown between Black Hawk and Pecatonica went to the Warriors.
Black Hawk (8-4, 4-0 Six Rivers East) remains in the driver's seat after hanging on to a four-game match win Tuesday, 25-14, 15-25, 25-7, 25-16.
Black Hawk coach Rachel Wolff isn't comfortable despite moving one win ahead of the Vikings and extending the Warriors' conference winning streak to 16 matches over the past two years.
"There was maybe some hype to this match," Wolff said. "If anything, that just puts a bigger target on our back. Instead of making us feel more at ease, it puts more pressure on."
Pecatonica co-coach Cher Schliem will use the Vikings' first conference loss as motivation.
"This team always battles," Schliem said. "They don't give up easily. They have a lot of fight in them. They came ready to play.
"We look at every match as a learning experience. There is a lot of season left. We will meet them again."
After a convincing win in the first game for the Warriors, the Vikings stormed back in the second game. Pecatonica (7-3, 3-1), behind some pinpoint serving by senior Brittany Kent and two kills by junior Kimee Chandler, jumped out to a 13-6 lead and never looked back. Kent had 10 kills and Chandler had 13 digs to lead the Vikings.
"We just came out and started attacking right away," Schliem said. "We built a lead and didn't have any letdowns."
The Warriors were led by senior Paige Butler, who had 15 spike kills and two tip kills.
"We just went out there and were not really motivated and didn't have energy," Butler said. "They (Pecatonica) have a good team. We just wanted to come in confident and hope to win."
The Vikings just couldn't replicate and sustain the momentum. The Warriors built a 13-3 lead in the third game behind some strong serving by sophomore Alyssa Piefer. Black Hawk senior Maria Meives delivered six straight service points, including three of her five aces on the night, to give the Warriors an insurmountable 23-6 lead.
Wolff said the Warriors have well below 90 percent on accurate serves.
"We have really worked hard on getting our serves in," Wolff said.
Black Hawk senior Kim Wellnitz had 10 spike kills, five tip kills and three blocks. Black Hawk senior Gabi Lehner had a team-high 20 assists.
