JUDA - Juda hosted Black Hawk in the conference opener for both teams Tuesday night. Black Hawk pulled out a one-point victory, knocking off the Panthers, 48-47.

"I think we're getting better, but we're not winning," said Juda coach Mike Armitage. "I don't think we should be looking at moral victories as a 'good' at this point."

Tyler Peterson led Black Hawk with 15 points, and Seth Butler added 11.

Cody Suiter was the Panthers' leading scorer, with 18 points.

"We had some guys that I look for some scoring out of that didn't get it done," said Armitage. "Part of that is attributed to what Black Hawk was doing. They're a nice team. But we gotta find a way to grind it out a little harder and find a way to win. We have a lot of seniors on this team and I know they don't want to settle for moral victories."

Juda (1-3) travels to Argyle on Thursday, while Black Hawk (3-0) will host Pecatonica.

Barneveld 62, Albany 52

BARNEVELD - The Albany boys basketball team lost a tough game in Barneveld Tuesday night, 62-52.

Albany trailed by 14 at halftime but outscored Barneveld by 10 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 4. Barneveld won the final quarter by 6 to lock up the win.

"We played well," said Albany coach Derik Doescher. "We dug ourselves a halftime deficit. We had a ton of turnovers at halftime. They're a very strong team again this year and they have a great home court advantage. I was thinking we could get blown out, but we outscored them in the third and we were right there. The kids played hard."

Junior Isaiah Shell continued his hot start to the season with a 27-point outburst.

"Barneveld played great defense, but he went at 'em and kept us in the game," Doescher said.

Albany was without two starters Tuesday night. Senior Tyler Van Dusen and junior Grant Schoenenberger were both out due to injury. Doescher said he was happy with the way other players stepped up in their place.

Cuba City 57, Darlington 38

DARLINGTON - A strong second half was not enough for the Darlington boys basketball team, and the Redbirds fell to Cuba City 57-38.

After going into the locker room down 30-10 at halftime, the Redbirds emerged to best Cuba City 28-27 in the second half. However, Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said the hole was too big to climb out of.

"We didn't make many shots (early)," Hopkins said. "You can't bury yourself against good teams like that."

Junior Michael Ruf led all Darlington scorers, with 12 points. Senior Griffin Heinberg added 10 points.

Monticello 59, Pecatonica 45

MONTICELLO - Monticello hosted Pecatonica in a Six Rivers boys basketball clash Tuesday night, with the host Ponies coming out on top, 59-45.

Monticello jumped out to an 11 point lead after the first quarter, but the Vikings pulled to within 3 at the half. Pecatonica nailed two quick three's to start the second half and take a 32-29 lead, but the Ponies took the lead for good with 1:23 left in the third quarter. With 5:19 left in the game, Monticello held just a three-point lead, but the Ponies went on a 15-1 run to put the game away.

Monticello (5-0) was led in scoring by Bryce Klitzke, who had 19. Other top scorers for the Ponies were Lucas Marty (14) and Ben May (10).

Senior Dillon Conwell led Pecatonica with 14 points. Nate Loyd also chipped in 10 for the Vikings (2-2).

Luther Prep 65, New Glarus 57

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights made a fourth quarter run, but Watertown Luther Prep made free throws when it mattered most to hang on to a non-conference win.

New Glarus (0-5) trailed 40-33 to start the fourth quarter. Luther Prep made 18 of 21 free throws in the final frame and finished 22 of 29 for the game.

"The two things that cost us were missed free throws and turning over the ball," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "That is our Achilles Heel. I think they played hard."

New Glarus senior Gabe Noyce scored a game-high 14 points. Junior Patrick Elzen added 11 points and freshman Landon Zimmerman chipped in 10. In other action, Beloit Turner defeated Brodhead 56-39.
